About the speakers

Sally Jordan

I am Professor of Physics Education and Head of the Open University's School of Physical Sciences in the Faculty of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), having previously been Head of the Department of Physical Sciences in the Science Faculty and the Science Faculty's Deputy Associate Dean with responsibility for Assessment.

My primary interests lie in developing the skills, especially the mathematical skills, which physics and other science students require for their study, and in sophisticated computer-marked assessment and the links between assessment and learning.

I was fortunate to have teaching fellowships with the two of the Open University's Centres for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETLs). I was academic advisor on e-assessment to the Virtual Learning Environment Team and continue to work, in partnership with eSTEeM and the OpenScience Laboratory, on various projects with are evaluating the impact of our assessment practice on our students. I am on the organising committee for the international Assessment in Higher Education (AHE) Conference and have recently initiated a collaboration between AHE and the Transforming Assessment webinar series.

I have a BSc in Physics and a PhD by published work with the title E-assessment for learning? Exploring the potential of computer-marked assessment and computer-generated feedback, from short-answer questions to assessment analytics. I am a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Clem Herman

Professor Clem Herman is Director of eSTEeM, the OU's Centre for STEM pedagogy (www.open.ac.uk/esteem) which promotes innovation, scholarship and enterprise in STEM open and distance learning. She is the University's Athena SWAN champion and chairs the OU Gender Equality Steering Group. Clem is Professor of Gender and Technology in the School of Computing and Communications and works on a number of projects to research and increase the participation of women in IT including leading the Open University's widening participation work as part of the Institute of Coding.

Carol Morris

I joined the Open University in 1992 as a Staff Tutor in the West Midlands Region, after several years as a student and Associate Lecturer. I was an Associate Dean (Learning and Teaching) in the Faculty of Technology and in the Faculty of Mathematics, Computing and Technology before becoming a central academic and Director of Teaching in the former Department of Engineering and Innovation.

I am currently Deputy Head of School and have recently chaired the team which made a successful submission for an Athena SWAN Bronze award.

I am a Council member of the Women's Engineering Society and a Member of the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
