Honorary Doctorate for Professor Brian Ellison

Professor Brian Ellison, a world-leading expert in millimetre and sub-millimetre wave technologies, received his Honorary Doctorate from the Open University in a ceremony at Birmingham Symphony Hall on Friday 27th October 2017. Brian, who is also a Visiting Professor in the School of Physical Sciences, cited his scientific links with the school in his address, where he praised the graduates, particularly those from the STEM faculty, on their own achievements in graduating "with him". Brian was nominated for his honorary doctorate by his friend and long-time colleague, Prof. Glenn White, who cited his enormous contributions to sub-mm technologies in astronomy and Earth Observation, as well as his endeavours in establishing strong links between RAL Space and the OU - from which many in SPS continue to benefit with joint appointments and shared PhD studentships. Brian shared the day with his wife and children, and was honoured to be presented with his degree by the OU Chancellor - Baroness Lane-Fox of Soho, as well as sitting next to the Lord Mayor of Birmingham for the ceremony (and the lunch). A number of graduates paused on stage to congratulate Brian and shake his hand, and his "fame" continued when a sister of a graduand came and asked for a photo with him! We warmly congratulate Brian on this outstanding achievement and hope he enjoyed the day.
