Outreach and Public Engagement.

“Space” rarely fails to capture the imagination and interest of the public, whatever their age, ability or interest in other science areas. PSSRI has considerable experience in communicating its research activities beyond the scientific community and many of our scientists are recognised as outstanding science communicators.

Our motivation for public engagement stems from our enthusiasm and excitement for space and planetary science and our wish to raise awareness and support for our, and the UK’s, involvement in global space and planetary science research programmes. We hope that by engaging readily with the non-science community we can inspire a future generation of scientists and engineers and make a significant contribution to the UK’s knowledge economy.

PSSRI has a diverse portfolio of outreach activities aimed at audiences outside the scientific community, including schools, families, industry and decision makers. We regularly collaborate with external partners, such as education networks, learned societies and academic institutions, to develop and disseminate activities based on PSSRI science.

Several PSSRI staff are registered Science and Engineering Ambassadors.

Many of our current outreach activities are funded by external bodies such as the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), The Royal Society and Research Councils UK  and supported by The Open University.

Rosetta on the Road  - an educational and outreach package delivered by the PSSRI team that built the Ptolemy instrument for ROSETTA – the European Space Agency's  comet chaser and lander.

Rocks From Space  – an outreach package delivered by PSSRI planetary scientists based around meteorites, asteroids, comets and planets.

Mars in their Eyes  - An exhibition of cartoons telling the story of Mars exploration and scientific discovery - past, present and future – collated by PSSRI’s Prof Colin Pillinger and The Cartoon Museum.
