The Langmuir probe measures the properties of the cometary plasma. The measurements are based on the weak electric currents present between the spacecraft and the small amounts of plasma in otherwise "empty" space. Measuring the current on the probe will allow measurements to be made of the density, velocity and temperature of the plasma.
