Using OER to Create Learning Content – A Practical Project

Divining the issues around creating teaching and learning materials using Open Educational Resources (OER) is no simple challenge. It requires an in-depth understanding of the community of authors and users, knowledge and experience of asset and resource creation, and a clear idea of who the users are likely to be and why they might access the resources. To meet this challenge, the Microsites Consortium Project is a partnership between four institutions – the Open University, Manchester University, Nottingham University and the University of Leicester.  The representatives from each of these institutions bring with them a wealth of knowledge about the sector, OER, and learning and teaching resource creation.

To develop their understanding on the issues around creating resources using OER, the project team is developing two websites: Digital Scholarship and Ready2Research. These two websites have secondary purposes too. Digital Scholarship is aimed at undergraduates, developing their skills as independent learners. Ready2Research, meanwhile, will focus on empowering international students with the ability to assess their readiness for postgraduate studies in the UK.

The Open University together with their partners is using their combined knowledge and background to search out, quality assure and curate content to develop the websites. This approach should ensure robust learning resources that enable their intended users to develop their skills in either digital scholarship or in identifying their readiness to embark on an English research degree.
