'Be Jennie Lee' Film Screening

Dates
Friday, June 7, 2019 - 12:15 to 13:00
Location
Lochgelly Centre, Bank St, Lochgelly, Fife, KY5 9RD
Jennie Lee

The Open University is pleased to be supporting the film screening of 'Be Jennie Lee' performances by eight primary schools from the Cowdenbeath area, inspired by the founder of The Open University, Jennie Lee of Lochgelly.

Pupils from primary years 3 to 7 wrote and developed plays during 'Take Over Weeks', in which they worked with local freelance Musical Director and Producer, Janet Robertson. The plays from all eight participating primary schools will be shared in this celebratory event, with a mix of live perfomances and a film montage of the plays.

The project and performances were inspired by local woman Jennie Lee's legacy in education and the arts. It will include a song about her life and the OU is pleased to be supporting the event with a display about Jennie Lee and the creation of the OU.

Jennie Lee (1904-1988) was born in Lochgelly. She was a miner’s daughter who became an MP aged 24, when the voting age for women was 30. She was the first ever Minister for Arts and went on to become Minister for Education, setting up The Open University. She fought ferociously for a university open to all; no qualifications are required for most OU courses. The OU is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Places at this event are free of charge and there is no need to book in advance. It is hosted by the Cowdenbeath Area Committee of Fife Council.
