Winning Students funding applications now open for student athletes

Scotland’s national sports scholarship programme, Winning Students, has opened the application process for its 2018/19 intake of individual scholar athletes.

As well as working with Member Institutions - including The Open University in Scotland - to offer benefits including academic flexibility, Winning Students provides scholarship funding to help students achieve their sporting and academic goals.

The national sports scholarships are open to current students and to school leavers preparing to start their studies in September 2018.

Applications are now being sought for Individual Scholarships, which apply to athletes competing in individual and small combination sports such as athletics, gymnastics and weightlifting amongst others.

Students competing in badminton, canoeing, curling, football, golf, hockey, judo, orienteering, rowing, swimming, tennis and triathlon should not apply for Individual Scholarships as athletes in these sports are nominated directly by the appropriate governing body of sport.

To be considered for support, applicants should meet the selection criteria outlined on the Winning Students website.

The programme currently supports more than 150 students, with individual scholars including Paralympic cycling champion, Karen Darke (pictured above left), who is studying psychology and Spanish through the Open University in Scotland and British record-holder and IAAF Diamond League winner, Laura Muir, training to be a vet at the University of Glasgow.

Individual Scholarship applications are invited by current and prospective students by 11.59pm on Sunday 22 April to be considered for funding support from September 2018. School leavers should provide proof of application (college) or a UCAS number (university).

College, universities and governing bodies of sport staff are permitted to submit nominations on behalf of an athlete.

Winning Students is funded by the Scottish Funding Council and run by the University of Stirling.
