Faculty of Social Sciences
The department specialises in the provision of undergraduate economics courses for part-time students. Students can enrol without any prior qualifications to an economics programme that progresses from foundation to third level. A range of economic issues are explored throughout the programme using written materials, multimedia software, and personal tutor support.
A high value is placed by employers on key numeric and analytical skills that are learned as part of the economics programme. It has been found, for example, that the percentage earnings premium for women choosing economics as a degree subject is 39.3%, compared to 24% for social sciences and 17.4% for arts (Conlon et al 2002).
