Faculty of Social Sciences
If you are interested in applying to do a postgraduate degree with us, in the first instance please visit our postgraduate admissions page, which sets out how to do this.
Each year the University, the Faculty of Social Sciences and the Department of Geography may offer, normally around March, a number of fully-funded studentships (fees, maintenance grant and some research expenses) open to all candidates regardless of nationality. These are awarded on a competitive basis and typically match the grants received by students funded by the UK Research Councils. These will be advertised through the Open University job opportunities website and at jobs.ac.uk. Any informal enquiries about these should be made to the Postgraduate Admissions Tutor.
Depending on your nationality, there may be other sources of funding available to you, such as Commonwealth Scholarships or Fullbright Awards. We are happy to discuss these with you on an individual basis when we invite you to submit a formal application to our PhD programme.
If you are to identify a sponsor (such as a research organisation, charity or company) who may be willing to fund 50% of a full studentship (fees and stipend), The Open University may consider contributing the other 50%.
We may also consider applications by self-funded students. For 2011-2012, fees for full-time study are currently £3,493 per year for home (UK and EU) students, and £9,279 for overseas students, and for part-time study the rates are £1,700 for home students and £4,430 for overseas students. In addition to these costs, you should budget for the costs of travel and living expenses.
