I grew up in the Netherlands, where I did my BA and MSc degrees. Before and during my studies I lived and worked in many places around the world. Early 2011 I started my PhD at the Open University. Crossing the boundaries between Geography and Geology, this interdisciplinary PhD focuses on community resilience to geological hazards in the Solomon Islands.
BA Cultural Anthropology and Development Studies (2005)
MSc Cultural Anthropology (2007)
MSc Environment and Resource Management (2008)
My research interests are broad but generally focus on the interactions between humans and the natural environment they live in.
Ranging from co-existing with geological hazards to applying sustainable land management practices, I am interested in vulnerability, resilience and risk reduction of local communities in remote, rural areas.
I also have a strong interest in interdisciplinary research and participatory methodologies and the use of (audio)visual methods.
Documentary filmmaking, photography, travelling, rock-climbing, hiking and other outdoor activities.
