The study of Politics is a key area of Social Science enquiry. The Department of Politics and International Studies at The Open University is committed to an open and innovative agenda for politics courses, which have a strong interdisciplinary flavour. Politics is viewed as the organizing centre for many other social relationships, so the department is determined to make its courses relevant to the day-to-day activities of a practical politics as well as to an informed intellectual scholarship. The department has an international reputation for research in the areas of normative political theory, comparative and European politics, and international political economy. POLIS is continuing to develop path-breaking new courses (in political ideas, environmental politics and politics after 9/11), and is planning major new research initiatives, in particular around citizenship.
