Faculty of Social Sciences
Welcome to the Department of Psychology in the Faculty of Social Sciences. As Europe's largest provider of university-level education in Psychology, the Open University offers undergraduate, taught masters and research degrees and a postgraduate conversion diploma to adult students. The psychology provision at the OU was rated as excellent in the 1999 Subject Review. We have a vigorous research culture with particular strengths in discourse analysis and psycho-social studies and forensic psychology. Our general orientation which is reflected in both teaching and research is specifically multi-perspective. We are concerned, for example, that our students will not only be versed in methodological skills but also have understanding of fundamental conceptual issues in psychology and the different ways in which psychological knowledge may be constructed.
The Department of Psychology in the Faculty of Social Sciences constitutes the main group of psychologists in the university. However, members of the department work in close collaboration, both in their teaching and research, with psychologists in other Faculties, particularly the Centre for Human Development and Learning in the Faculty of Education and Language Studies and the Psychology in Science Group in the Biology Department in the Faculty of Science.
