Records on film

A microfilm series of friendly society records has been launched.

First in the series is a compilation reel containing records drawn from the archives of three major societies:

  • The Independent Order of Oddfellows, Manchester Unity. Inaugurated in 1810 it grew into one of the largest societies, covering the whole of the UK and beyond. Oddfellows Friendly Society Records (1828 - 1950) on Microfilm leaflet.
  • The Rational Shelley. A collecting society established in 1837 by Robert Owen. It now incorporates 38 different societies.
  • The Rechabite Friendly Society. Founded in 1835 its records reveal much about an important working class ethical movement teetotalism.

This reel has extracts from the societies’ journals from the 1830s to the late 1980s, photographs, minutes and other sources. From these researchers can find out about:

  • Investment decisions
  • Growth and decline in membership
  • Biographical details of prominent members
  • Mortality rates
  • Descriptions of parades and ceremonies
  • Debate about the shaping of state welfare provision
  • Accounts of campaigns, promotions and ethical dilemmas
  • Details of branch and lodge activities
