Introducing the Interdependence Day project

The Interdependence Day project (ID) makes space for all of us to consider new responses to issues around environment, development and globalization. People need to think about these issues in an integrated way - but the scale and complexity of the issues can seem beyond the reach of everyday life.

ID aims to refresh jaded debates about sustainable development, globalization and environmental change through a body of events and publications. These include Interdependence Day: a public event comprising a bundle of interactive workshops and debates, performances and art works and well-known speakers; popular publications, and the ID research programme, including a seminar series and academic publications. Since our launch in 2006 we have produced:

Research team

The Interdependence Day project brings together people who are looking to test new ways of framing environment and development issues. Initiated and directed by Dr Joe Smith, current partners include the Department of Geography at The Open University, the School of Architecture at the University of Sheffield and the new economics foundation (nef).

Please contact us and request more information about the project from Joe Smith or Corrina Cordon.

Publications

Atlas: Geography, Architecture and Change in an Interdependent World

The book Atlas: Geography, Architecture and Change in an Interdependent World combines recent thinking on human geography and architecture on global environmental change issues, setting out to develop a reinterpretation of cartography and a reframing of sustainability. The project is in collaboration with the Open Space Research Centre at The Open University and is a collaboration between academics from the Department of Geography at the OU, the School of Architecture, University of Sheffield and researchers at the New Economics Foundation.
