George Callaghan's research interest began in labour markets and the labour process. More recently he has been working on research into the economic development opportunities associated with community land ownership, particularly linked to community renewable energy projects. He has succeeded in getting funding from the Carnegie Trust and is working closely with Community Energy Scotland, an organisation with responsibility for delivering Scottish Government grants and providing assistance to community renewables projects.
