Profile

Georgina Blakeley joined The Open University in 2006 from the University of Huddersfield where she was Head of Politics from 2000. She gained a first class honours degree in Modern Languages from the then Polytechnic of Wolverhampton (1987), an MA with distinction in Latin American Politics from the University of Liverpool (1992) and her PhD from the University of Bradford in 2000.

Course development and teaching

Georgina Blakeley's teaching has concentrated in recent years on producing and then presenting the Level 1 Introduction to Social Sciences foundation module, Introducing the social sciences (DD101). At present, she is module chair for the new Level 1 foundation module Introducing the social sciences (DD102).

Research interests

Dr Blakeley's research is concentrated in two key areas. The first area covers issues of democracy and democratization in Spanish politics. Recent themes include electoral politics (e.g. 'It's politics stupid.' The Spanish General Election of 2004' (in Parliamentary Affairs, vol. 59, no. 2, 2006) and historical memory (e.g. in 'Digging up Spain's past: consequences of truth and reconciliation', Democratization, vol. 12, no, 1, 2005). In relation to this area, she is the co-editor of the International Journal of Iberian Studies.

The second area covers issues of citizen participation and urban governance drawing on case studies in Spain (e.g. in 'Local governance and local democracy: the Barcelona model', Local Government Studies, vol. 31, no. 2, 2005) and in the UK (e.g. in 'Governing ourselves: citizen participation and governance in Barcelona and Manchester', International Journal of Urban and Regional Research, 34(1), 2010).

Dr Blakeley's editorial work includes a series of three co-edited books on political concepts with Prof Valerie Bryson. The most recent looks at The Impact of Feminism on Political Concepts and Debates (Manchester University Press, 2007).

PhD supervision

Georgina Blakeley welcomes applications to supervise PhD students in the areas of citizen participation and urban governance and Spanish politics, particularly in relation to democracy, democratization and historical memory.
