Achieve and prosper: why Wales’ most innovative think tank and education provider have joined forces

Wales’ most innovative and influential think tank the Bevan Foundation has announced a new partnership with The Open University in Wales.

The announcement comes during Learning at Work Week, with The Open University (OU) in Wales becoming the Bevan Foundation's second confirmed organisational partner for 2019.

The OU in Wales is the leading provider of part-time undergraduate higher education and supported distance learning across Wales. This year it is celebrating 50 years of opening up education to all.

Welsh Government announces new agreement with OU for part-time teacher training

The Open University in Wales has been awarded a contract with the Welsh Government to deliver part-time and work based teacher training.

The Open University in Wales welcomes large increase in part-time student numbers

The OU in Wales has welcomed a Welsh Government announcement of a 35% increase in the number of part-time undergraduate students in Wales.

The OU in Wales itself has seen a 49% increase in student numbers in the October 2018 recruitment cycle, which equates to 748 additional students. 

Since September 2018, a maintenance grant of up to £4,500 has been made available to eligible part-time students studying at home. This makes Wales the only country in Europe to offer part-time students the equivalent support to their full-time counterparts.

OU in Wales kicks off 50th anniversary celebrations

The Open University in Wales launched its 50th anniversary celebrations recently during a gathering of university leaders.

The Higher Education Council for Wales (HEFCW) held its annual public meeting at The OU in Wales in Cardiff. Afterwards, Director Louise Casella addressed council members, where she gave an overview of The OU’s activity over the next 12 months.


The OU was established in 1969 by Prime Minister Harold Wilson. It was his vision to create ‘an University of the air’, a bold concept of making university education open to all.
