The Open University in Wales has been announced as the winner of the FairPlay employer award at Womenspire 2020 on Tuesday evening.

The annual ceremony is organised by Chwarae Teg and recognises the achievements of women across Wales – both in work and their personal lives. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, this year’s ceremony was streamed over multiple online platforms to viewers at home.

The FairPlay Employers award recognises organisations working towards gender equality within their workplaces.

Louise Casella, Director of The Open University in Wales said:

“We bring university education to people who for one reason or another want or need to take a different route towards a degree. I think we have a great working environment, and we’re really keen that it’s a creative, happy and challenging place for people.

“We looked around our office a few years ago, and asked whether the make up of our staff reflected our students and the population of Wales.

“We’ve worked with Chwarae Teg to look at our recruitment methods and asked questions to make sure that we consider gender diversity in those processes. We’ve also looked at how we support colleagues in work to develop and progress. Now we have a Fairplay Silver Award that we’re delighted with and are working towards a Gold.

“I feel that colleagues in the Open University in Wales are increasingly engaged with contributing to the bigger picture and working with other organisations for the good of our communities in Wales.

“They’re a fantastic team of staff and I absolutely love working with them!”

Cerys Furlong, Chief Executive of Chwarae Teg, said:

“The Open University has worked incredibly hard, set the bar high and is truly deserving of the Womenspire 2020 FairPlay Employer Award.

“It has a clear commitment to openness when it comes to people, places and ideas and has equality and diversity embedded in all that it does.  The organisation’s success at Womenspire reflects this and the fact that its leadership team has implemented a wide range of internal and external initiatives which really work. What they have achieved has been transformational and enabled staff and students to reap the benefits of its inclusive culture.”
