The are two main types of search engine.
These search engines search the entire web for information. Examples of web search engines are Google, Yahoo, Lycos, Ask Jeeves, AltaVista and UK Plus.
These search engines search for pages within a specific site. Guardian Unlimited, BBC, The Open University and Directgov all have site searches.
Most search engines are fairly simple and user friendly. By far the easiest to use is Google, which is not dominated by advertising and is largely text based. Most search engines work in a similar way.
