Present for observation session

Megan Strange telescope control, Jim Bateman image analysis Gareth Rowlands environmental control Urszula Domek log keeper

Deneb (talk) 14:25, 14 March 2018 (GMT)20:10 Megan took control of the telescope, and Fiona (tutor) suggested using program name of Deneb plus a suitable identifier.

Deneb (talk) 14:25, 14 March 2018 (GMT)20:14 Megan began programming the schedule, and checking which settings to use.

Target star J114749.04 +351335.2 clear filter, a 20 second exposure, 2 images and 2 x 2 binning.

Deneb (talk) 14:25, 14 March 2018 (GMT)20:15 Megan had some concerns about program, and Fiona advised it can be edited. Jim confirmed the co-ordinates of the target star to assist Megan.

Deneb (talk) 14:25, 14 March 2018 (GMT)20:20 Jim took control of the telescope, and he and Megan sorted out the details of the program. Fiona asked if there were any errors being shown, and these were corrected.

Deneb (talk) 14:25, 14 March 2018 (GMT)20:26 Jim submitted the program which was accepted, but found the RA and the dec had changed from his input.

Deneb (talk) 14:25, 14 March 2018 (GMT)20:27 The request was accepted, and Megan confirmed it was in AstroDrive.

Deneb (talk) 14:25, 14 March 2018 (GMT)20:33 Jim downloaded the image and identified it with the finder chart. He checked the background levels.

Deneb (talk) 14:25, 14 March 2018 (GMT)20:39 Fiona suggested doing another test picture, and Jim set up the image for a 60 second exposure.

Deneb (talk) 14:25, 14 March 2018 (GMT)20:41 Fiona advised that if we wished to publish our light curve, it would have to use a filter.

Deneb (talk) 14:25, 14 March 2018 (GMT)20:43 Jim downloaded the first of his second batch of images with different background values 1500.

Deneb (talk) 14:25,

14 March 2018 (GMT)20:44 Red filter used with a 60 second exposure and all other settings unchanged. Star count is 11,000, and background 1,200. Advised that red filter will bring down count at culmination to an acceptable level.

Deneb (talk) 14:25, 14 March 2018 (GMT)20:49 Discussed using other filters, decided two might be good idea, red and blue. 60 seconds exposure in red is suitable, but will need to adjust the exposure for a different filter. Decided to keep to one filter per night.

Deneb (talk) 14:25, 14 March 2018 (GMT)20:54 Jim confirmed the aperture setting included the close companion, which according to the video, is negligible.

Deneb (talk) 14:25, 14 March 2018 (GMT)20:55 Jim set up the time based observation schedule for observing the target star through the night:

starting at 20:00 on 13 March and ends on 14 March at 06:30. 1 object observation repeat, using the red filter, with a 60 second exposure and with 2 repeats. 2 x 2 binning, and total observing time 000400.

Deneb (talk) 14:25, 14 March 2018 (GMT)21:12 Mark was emailed to ask about the time, and Jim raised the question about how to access the images from AstroDrive again.

Deneb (talk) 14:29, 14 March 2018 (GMT)21:17 Jim has given the object name as J114749.

Deneb (talk) 14:29, 14 March 2018 (GMT)21:27 Mark explained the schedule is only 4 minutes and will continue until the time runs out.

Deneb (talk) 14:29, 14 March 2018 (GMT)21:30 Jim submitted the time based observation. Cleared the immediate queue, and checked that the program was working.

Deneb (talk) 14:29, 14 March 2018 (GMT)21:34 Fiona checked that group had done what we needed to do, and left.

Deneb (talk) 14:29, 14 March 2018 (GMT)21:36 Mark answered our query about what happens after the computer program has finished, and the group decided to finish the observation session.

14/03/2018

Observers: Joseph Tupper, Marianne Denegri, Timothy Randolph

All times in GMT

18:45 - Team members gather in tutor room

19:00 - Team members connect to PIRATE dashboard

19:15 - Telescope opens to take Flats

19:39 - Flats interrupted, telescope closes due to high windspeed (>55 mph)

19:53 - Wind speed drops to acceptable levels

19:58 - Dome opens, windspeed is slightly below critical (~54.69 mph). Schedule transitions to Night

20:18 - We discover that our time slot was booked for January of last year... so Meridith re-arranged our observing slot for tonight.

20:19 - Timothy takes control of the telescope. Infra-red lights turned off. Observing schedule submitted for test star J063111.02+305615.9, due to target star not being visible until ~22:30. Filter is R, exposure time 20s.

20:20 - PIRATE moves into position, takes an image of exposure time 0.1s in the R filter.

20:22 - PIRATE takes a test exposure of 20s in the B filter.

20:31 - PIRATE takes a test exposure of 60s in the B filter.

20:38 - PIRATE takes a test exposure of 20s in the G filter

20:46 - Peak wind speed exceeded (64 mph), dome closes. As selection of images for the test target star have been taken, we verify that the star being observed is the one we wanted. We experiment with the test images in AstroImageJ

22:10 - Due to the wind speed not decreasing past the critical limit, we set up an observing schedule to run as soon as the wind speed drops. This schedule takes 5 R-filter exposures, then 5 G-filter exposures and then 5 B-filter exposures, each taking 60s.

22:52 - The peak wind speed drops to an acceptable value, and the telescope begins to execute its commands.

22:54 - The first image of the target star  J132837.25+353311.6 is taken

23:05 - We compared the star with the record on Simbad and identified that the target star was indeed in the image. NOTE: Compared to Simbad, the image PIRATE has taken is flipped both vertically and horizontally. It is otherwise identical. The image, with the target star circled, has been uploaded to the Pollux forums thred "First Observing Session Results".

23:20 - The peak wind speed exceeds 70 mph, and so the dome closes again. The telescope has taken 25 images - one full set of 5 RGB, and one with 5 R-filter, 5 G-filter and no B-filter (having been interrupted).

23:21 - We notice that one of the images ( PIRATE_S382_00_Target_star1328_00_Filter_G_00_2018_3_14_23_20_48 ), the last Green image from 23:20 has a large streak across one of the stars in the bottom left, and is very dim - presumably from where it has been shaken about by the wind.

23:29 - Upon analysis, our counts for each filter type average out at approximately: R-10,000, G-7,000, B-4,000

23:59 - Wind once more gets to a safe level, PIRATE resumes its repeating schedule

00:04 - Once again, wind speed goes past the threshold. Image PIRATE_S382_00_Target_star1328_00_Filter_B_00_2018_3_15_00_03_56 is shaky, and therefore unusable.

00:23 - Wind dips to a safe level before immediately rising once more.

01:11 - The cloud level is now below its threshold (~3000) and the peak wind speed is still too high (>55) for the telescope to operate. We decide to leave the telescope overnight in the hopes that it produces a few more images in the time provided (~5 horus)

01:15 - The group leaves the chat, Timothy remaining to keep an eye on the telescope status overnight.

21:56, 29/03/18, dome is open, all sensors are blue
 21:57, 29/03/18, Irene probing test star 6:31:11 30:56:15
22:17, 29/03/18, first 2 images of the test star in astodrive
22:25, 29/03/18, Michael takes control of telescope to target our star
22:29, 29/03/18, 1st image of our star is on astrodrive
22:40, 29/03/18, Michael now trying 45sec instead of 60s exposure time
22:48, 29/03/18, comparing the counts in different filters for different exposure times
                               before deciding
 23:00, 29/03/18, changing to 30sec;
23:05, 29/03/18, cloud cover constant, average wind speed constant at approx.
13.00 km/h, wind direction 65.45°, outside humidity approx. 31%, outside
temp approx. 8° and constant, no rain, dome temp decreasing within
                                boundaries
 23:07, 29/03/18, programm entered until 05.30 with 30 seconds
23:12, 29/03/18, Fraser says the telescope is not pointing to our star, although we see the images of our star in astrodrive
23:14, 29/03/18, we all agree that the coords we see are odd, but all agree to start the run.
23:14, 29/03/18, Michael cleared and resubmitted
 | |- | Target_star1328 | 13h00m00.0s | 35°00'00.0" |
23:26, 29/03/18, need to clear again, telescope is not taking the right coords nor the right
                               time
23:26, 29/03/18 now only the time is wrong, corrds seem ok;
 | |- | Target_star1328 | RA: 13:28:37.2 | DEC: 35:33:12.0 |
23:29, 29/03/18 clearing again, no changes, time is still wrong
 23:32, 29/03/18 Irene takes control
23:36, 29/03/18 Irene submitted, seems fine now
23:44, 29/03/18 new image, not our star, seems to have been background as we waited
too long to enter the coords.
23:46, 29/03/18 new program kicks in, images are now correct
23:50, 29/03/18 Fraser and Mark leaving, Irene too
00:02, 30/03/18 Tracey and Michael leave
