JLB Lab Studies November 2011
- A book launch was held for Martin Weller on 15 Nov 2011, organised by Elizabeth FitzGerald and Rebecca Ferguson. Over 40 people attended in person and over 90 people attended online, via live streaming of the event. The event had extensive Twitter discussion, using the #digitalscholar hashtag.
External Engagement (including seminars, talks and workshops)
- Agnes Kukulska-Hulme gave an invited keynote at the annual Mobile Learning Day, Fernuniversitat in Hagen, Germany on 3 November.
- Agnes Kukulska-Hulme gave an invited keynote at the eLearning Futures Conference in Auckland, New Zealand (30 Nov - 1 Dec). In addition during this conference she was also (a) a member of a panel session (b) a discussant leading a formal critique of potential up and coming trends (c) being interviewed for an article to be published in The HETL International Review - a publication of the International Higher Education Teaching and Learning Association.
- 15 November 2011 Eileen Scanlon and Rebecca Ferguson met representatives of the Arizona State University Learning Sciences Institute at the London Knowledge Lab to discuss research interests and explore the potential for future collaborations.
- 28 November 2011 Mike Sharples attended an invited seminar by Lord Jim Knight, former Schools Minister, at the London Knowledge Lab. Mike discussed the promotion of UK research into mobile learning with Lord Knight.
New initiatives
Mike Sharples is working with people from KMI and Ecology to develop a proposal for the ERC Synergy initiative in the area of Citizen Inquiry Science. ERC Synergy grants are for interdisciplinary groupings of PIs and their research teams within an institution. Up to € 15 million per grant; each grant for up to 6 years. Eileen Scanlon and Patrick Mc Andrew and involved.
Mike Sharples visited Mike Munn at Apple UK to discuss opportunities for R&D collaboration in the area of learning with personal mobile devices.
Eileen Scanlon and Ann Jones visited David Crellin, Sciencescope as a follow up to the lab day held in September.
Eileen Scanlon and Mike Sharples as part of the TEL Impact Team are working on impact documents for the ESRC/EPSRC TEL Programme led by Richard Noss to be launched at a reception in the House of Lords in June. A further event is planned at the Royal Society in November 2012.
Eileen Scanlon and Rebecca Ferguson discussed with members of the Arizona State University the prospect of joint working on Research proposals.
The 'Your Heard It Here First' seminar series, organised by Elizabeth FitzGerald and Rebecca Ferguson, started on 17 November 2011 with Yishay Mor presenting a talk entitled "The Interweaved Fabrics of Reality: Physical, Social and Intentional". The next seminar is 15 November, presented by Mike Sharples, on 'Extreme Learning'. The seminars allow members of the OU to hear about work being presented by other members of staff, before it is published more widely.

2nd November: Naomi Norman and Mark Abadour from Epic Ltd visited Mike Sharples to discuss R&D collaboration in the area of contextual mobile learning.
17th November: Inta Bakewell from Twig (http://twig-it.com/) visited Mike Sharples and Liz FitzGerald to discuss R&D collaboration in the area of evaluation of learning from online trigger video.
