Less than half of girls from the poorest quintile who attend primary school transition to secondary school. IGATE-T seeks to improve the life chances of over 70,000 marginalised girls by supporting their learning and helping them to transition from primary education to post-primary options such as secondary school or community-based learning.
The Open University is the academic lead for a whole school development programme, which will improve inclusive education and the teaching of literacy and numeracy, enabling schools to be safe and supportive environments which enhance girls’ learning, and is contributing to the literacy and numeracy learning of these girls in the different contexts they face.
The IGATE-T project aims to improve the life chances of 73,492 marginalised girls across nine districts of Zimbabwe.
The project will ensure that girls are enrolled in and are attending school, increase their skills in literacy, numeracy, and financial literacy, and boost their confidence and self-esteem.
It will also help girls transition from primary into post-primary options, and create an enabling environment where girls feel safe and supported to study. This will include increasing the capacities of key stakeholders in communities, target schools and the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, and transforming harmful social norms, practices and behaviours to support girls’ education.
I have some non-readers in my class. I now get them to use their hands – drawing or crafts - and put their work in the classroom. This makes the non-readers more interested and confident. But I still don’t know how to help them read and that is where I need help.Primary school teacher
