Frequently Asked Questions

What is a virtual internship?

A virtual internship is simply a work placement that you can undertake from home. Much like any other internship, you will work under supervision on tasks or projects that help you develop the skills you need in order to succeed in your career and gain work experience. The main difference between a virtual and traditional internship is that you will be working remotely from work, communicating with your supervisor and team via phone and internet.

Any opportunities advertised by an employer as ‘virtual’ will have been designed so that you can carry out the work for them away from the employer’s premises or a typical office environment.

What is the application process?

Each virtual internship has its own application process for students to complete. When you register your interest for a particular role you will receive an application pack with details of the recruitment process and resources to support you.

Who can apply?

You will need to be a current Open University student or have completed your OU studies within the last 3 years. You will need to be resident and able to work in the UK. Some internships will have additional restrictions or criteria due to funding constraints or expertise required. This information will always be available on the ‘To apply’ section of the internship advertisement.

What do I need to undertake a virtual internship?

Working from home is like studying from home. You will need to make sure you have a suitable space or a room in which to complete your work. You’ll also require a laptop or a computer with access to the internet.  We advise that if you see a placement that you’re interested in, read the advert carefully to understand what you’re likely to need to carry out the work.

Can you help me with my application?

Yes, when you register your interest in an application you will be sent an application pack. This pack will include links to resources that will support you in your application. It will also include information on requesting a careers consultation. This can be for careers advice in general or specific advice such as writing CV’s and covering letters, interview techniques and practice.

When will the placement start and finish?

This will vary and roles will be advertised throughout the year.

How long is the internship?

This will vary some internships may offer 15 hours a week for 4 weeks and other 10 hours a week for 20 weeks. Some will offer the flexibility to discuss hours and duration at interview.

I am on benefits – will this placement effect my benefits?

The Open University cannot advise on this matter, and we would recommend that you to discuss it with your benefits advisor at Job Centre Plus.

Can I organise my own placement?

Yes, you can. If you’re interested in a specific organisation or job role then you can explore the possibility directly with an employer.
