Andy Squires

Andy is Headteacher and Director of Denbigh Teaching School in Milton Keynes. After being educated in a Yorkshire comprehensive school, Andy progressed to University at Newcastle reading Microbiology BSc. Following his university education, Andy's future was uncertain and life working in a hospital lab as a Medical Laboratory Scientific Officer (MLSO) seemed to be on the cards. As a stop gap Andy decided to try for a PGCE, mainly to prolong his life as a student for an additional year. It was during this time that Andy's two placements, one in an innovative school in Sunderland and the other in a mining town in Northumbria, confirmed his worst fears.  Teaching most definitely was for him.

Since then Andy has taught in a total of five schools, ranging from a high achieving boys grammar school in London to an 11-16 leafy rural comprehensive school in Suffolk, finally bringing him to his current position as Senior Deputy Headteacher and Director of Denbigh Teaching School, Milton Keynes.

A common theme throughout Andy's career has been a strong commitment to comprehensive education delivered through local communities and a passion about the sciences and technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Despite his responsibilities as Senior Deputy Headteacher and Director of Denbigh Teaching School Andy still has a teaching timetable and likes nothing more than to be spending time with students in the lab, exploring what bodybuilders, diet pills and World War 2 munitions factory workers have in common.
