Kris Stutchbury


Kris is a Co-Investigator on The Open University’s ‘Engaging opportunities’ project. She brings her expertise gained as a result of 20 years teaching Chemistry and Science in five different Secondary schools. She now works at The Open University as Director of Initial Teacher Education and runs the Post Graduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). She was the co-ordinator for TESSA Teaching Secondary Science, a project that is part of the TESSA programme of activities.


Kris is interested in Science Education and in particular the impact of Assessing Pupils' Progress (APP) on the assessment of science. She is also interested in International work and, based on her work on the TESSA programme has carried out research into implementation, with an emphasis on finding out what conditions need to be in place in order to successfully implement change in challenging environments.

Kris is also interested in research ethics and has developed a framework to support teachers and research students in identifying the ethical issues that could arise during their research activities. These ideas are being taught on Masters of Education courses and being used to support teachers researching their own practice.

Her research publications are hosted on Open Research Online.


Kris is a Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education and Language Studies (FELS) at The Open University. Before joining the OU, Kris was Head of Science in a large secondary school. During her 20 year career, she taught in five different schools and completed a Masters in Education at the University of Cambridge. She was part of the SATIS team, and worked on Salter’s A-level Chemistry. She supported teachers within the Local Authority in developing authentic coursework activities and regularly supported student teachers.

In 2008 she joined the OU as Subject Leader for Science on the PGCE and is now the Course Director. She has maintained her interest in Science Education through the TESSA programme. Kris also used her recent experience of teaching in school to contribute to updates to SEH806: Contemporary Issues in Science Learning.
