{"id":1148,"date":"2011-03-08T11:41:53","date_gmt":"2011-03-08T10:41:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/History-of-the-OU\/?p=1148"},"modified":"2011-05-26T15:58:58","modified_gmt":"2011-05-26T14:58:58","slug":"happy-international-womens-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/History-of-the-OU\/?p=1148","title":{"rendered":"Happy international women&#8217;s day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The OU is celebrating international women&#8217;s day with new content on\u00a0its\u00a0iTunes U <a href=\"http:\/\/bit.ly\/ajKgxX\" onclick=\"javascript:urchinTracker ('\/outbound\/article\/bit.ly');\">homepage<\/a> and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/openlearn\/society\/the-real-wonder-women\" >The Real Wonder Women<\/a> on Open Learn, as well as various events on campus.<\/p>\n<p>This is no more than you would expect, given the significant role women have played in the OU&#8217;s history &#8211;\u00a0amongst its founders, as staff members at all levels and as a significant proportion of the student body.<\/p>\n<p>This blog has already looked at the role of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/History-of-the-OU\/?p=568\" >Jennie Lee<\/a>, the minister tasked with making the OU a reality and who left such a stamp on its institutional formation. Some other significant women in the University&#8217;s history are covered in an article on <a href=\"http:\/\/www8.open.ac.uk\/platform\/news-and-features\/women-driving-the-ou\" >Platform <\/a>today. And of course, some would argue that the OU has played a role in the struggle for women&#8217;s equality, but has been denigrated as a &#8216;housewives&#8217; university&#8217;.
