It has enabled the production of knowledge outside the academy\u00a0through a\u00a0commitment to communities of ex-students. Students, many of whom had never met one another, have been encouraged\u00a0to go on to form informal, voluntary, convivial, educational communities of practice based on those studies. These have enabled them to achieve together that which they could not separately. There are many OU examples of partnerships and traffic across what has been characterised as a \u2018moving frontier\u2019 between the state and civil society.<\/p>\n<p>Between 1976 and 1985 a second level module, <em>Art and environment, <\/em>did not offer practical skills in painting or sculpture nor did it offer art criticism or cognitive skills. Rather it dealt with \u2018the processes and attitudes of art\u2019 and sought to develop \u2018strategies for creative work\u2019.<strong> <\/strong>Members of the society created by former students of the module, \u2018share skills, experiences, ideas and knowledge of creativity and personal growth\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/History-of-the-OU\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/FACHRS-logo.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1175\" title=\"FACHRS-logo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/History-of-the-OU\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/FACHRS-logo-150x103.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"103\" \/><\/a>Created, in 1998, by students and staff from an interdisciplinary third level module, The Family &amp; Community Historical Research Society has conducted a range of connected local historical projects, encourages links between institutionally based and independent researchers and offers its own Continued Learning courses. This society is formally registered as a charity.<\/p>\n<p>A first level digital photography module which was first presented in 2007<em> <\/em>encourages students to upload photographs and discuss them online. Former students have established their own online groups in order to continue to collaborate.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/History-of-the-OU\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/EstherClark.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-1173\" title=\"EstherClark\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/History-of-the-OU\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/03\/EstherClark-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>In September 2010 the work of 36 OU students was collated into a book by fellow student Esther Clark <em>At <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/At-Home-Words-Esther-Clark\/dp\/0956659306\" onclick=\"javascript:urchinTracker ('\/outbound\/article\/www.amazon.co.uk');\">home with words<\/a><\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/At-Home-Words-Esther-Clark\/dp\/0956659306\" onclick=\"javascript:urchinTracker ('\/outbound\/article\/www.amazon.co.uk');\"> <\/a>includes 72 short stories and poems, many written for A215 <em>Creative Writing<\/em> but others written especially for the book.
