{"id":2232,"date":"2012-04-17T09:59:23","date_gmt":"2012-04-17T08:59:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/History-of-the-OU\/?p=2232"},"modified":"2012-04-17T11:12:03","modified_gmt":"2012-04-17T10:12:03","slug":"new-college-of-humanities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/History-of-the-OU\/?p=2232","title":{"rendered":"More on the New College of Humanities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Although the New College of Humanities&#8217;\u00a0plans to charge \u00a318,000 per year fees were mentioned almost a year ago in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/education\/educationnews\/8562531\/AC-Grayling-forced-to-flee-smoke-bomb-protest-at-Foyles-debate-on-private-university.html \" onclick=\"javascript:urchinTracker ('\/outbound\/article\/www.telegraph.co.uk');\"><em>Daily Telegraph<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em> (and reported on this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/History-of-the-OU\/?p=1374\" >blog<\/a>) it appears that it was only recently that geneticist Steve Jones discovered this. This led the Aberystwyth-born snails enthusiast to\u00a0distance himself from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/education\/universityeducation\/8569697\/AC-Graylings-New-College-could-cost-us-all-dear.html \" onclick=\"javascript:urchinTracker ('\/outbound\/article\/www.telegraph.co.uk');\">unborn <\/a>institution with which he had been associated. These fees, he said, mean that \u2018it can now no longer really claim to be about public education\u2019. He then went on, through a deft classical allusion, to compare the New College of Humanities to a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/education\/9205515\/A-C-Grayling-puts-a-brave-face-on-Steve-Joness-withdrawal-from-his-university.html \" onclick=\"javascript:urchinTracker ('\/outbound\/article\/www.telegraph.co.uk');\">toilet<\/a>. While other\u00a0universities plan to charge fees of around \u00a39,000, the OU will charge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/History-of-the-OU\/?p=1548\" >even less<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->Education is a subject on which Jones has strong views. On 13 January 2009 he told listeners to BBC Radio 5 Live: Breakfast that private schools were a \u2018cancer on the education system\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The history of the\u00a0the HE sector\u00a0suggests that quickfix private solutions to the problems of higher education provision have rarely been successful but, even if Grayling\u2019s scheme ends up face down in the Thames, it will have performed tasks which the govenment appears to value:\u00a0putting private colleges back on the agenda and making the loans scheme appear more acceptable.<\/p>\n<p>Research by Harvard University academics shows students at for-profits have <a href=\"http:\/\/campusprogress.org\/articles\/gao_report_blames_for-profit_colleges_not_students_for_shortcomings\/\" onclick=\"javascript:urchinTracker ('\/outbound\/article\/campusprogress.org');\">lower success rates <\/a>&#8211; including employment outcomes &#8211; than their counterparts at public and not-for-profit colleges. Sally Hunt, general secretary of the UK&#8217;s University and College Union, said that many of the for-profits identified in the report &#8220;are now <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timeshighereducation.co.uk\/story.asp?sectioncode=26&amp;storycode=419616&amp;c=1\" onclick=\"javascript:urchinTracker ('\/outbound\/article\/www.timeshighereducation.co.uk');\">circling UK <\/a>higher education&#8221;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Although the New College of Humanities&#8217;\u00a0plans to charge \u00a318,000 per year fees were mentioned almost a year ago in the Daily Telegraph, (and reported on this blog) it appears that it was only recently that geneticist Steve Jones discovered this.
