The OU is rarely seen as a precusor to these attempts to democratise education and other developments in this field. There is a history of MOOCs and the OU yet to be written. However,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.shirky.com\/weblog\/2012\/11\/napster-udacity-and-the-academy\/ \" onclick=\"javascript:urchinTracker ('\/outbound\/article\/www.shirky.com');\">here <\/a>Shirky\u00a0 (who popularised the term &#8216;cognitive surplus&#8217;\u00a0when describing the potential uses of the web) calls makes a connection and calls the OU &#8216;remarkable and interesting&#8217;. According to this <a href=\"http:\/\/chronicle.com\/blogs\/wiredcampus\/udacity-cancels-free-online-math-course-citing-lack-of-quality\/38998\" onclick=\"javascript:urchinTracker ('\/outbound\/article\/chronicle.com');\">report\u00a0<\/a>Udacity appears to aim to upload lecture theatre talks. This is not the technique favoured by the OU which has developed ideas about online collaborative learning and has popularised student engagement.
