Particularly, but not exclusively, since 1968 students have often been depicted as trouble-makers as they have taken to the streets to protest on a variety of issues.\u00a0 Reports of student protests have rarely represented students and their demands accurately, largely obscured the connections between these protests and wider society and treated \u2018students\u2019 as a single unified entity.<\/p>\n<p>This symposium seeks to re-focus the attention of historians and social scientists on students themselves, as well as the role and importance of students, in twentieth century Europe contributing to a more detailed and nuanced history of students. Papers might address, but are not limited to, the following topics:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The development of student identity across Europe<\/li>\n<li>The history of non-active or \u2018apathetic\u2019 students<\/li>\n<li>Student activism before \u201868<\/li>\n<li>Students and charity\/voluntary work<\/li>\n<li>Gender and the student experience<\/li>\n<li>Students and issues of \u2018race\u2019 and ethnicity<\/li>\n<li>Student unions and student involvement in international organisations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Please send abstracts (of c.250 words) and enquiries to Dr Jodi Burkett, Senior Lecturer in History, School of Social, Historical and Literary Studies, University of Portsmouth (<a href=\"mailto:jodi.burkett@port.ac.uk\">jodi.burkett@port.ac.uk<\/a>). <strong>The deadline for abstracts is the 31st of January 2013<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Travel bursaries are available for post-graduate and early career researchers to present papers at this symposium.
