In\u00a01976 Arthur Marwick (Professor of History at the OU)\u00a0explained that\u00a0his aim was \u2018to leave each piece of film to speak for itself without being overlaid by an intrusive commentary\u2019 (Arthur Marwick, \u2018History at the Open University\u2019, <em>Oxford<\/em><em> Review of Education<\/em>, 2, 2, 1976, pp. 129-137).\u00a0In spite of this Marwick\u2019s own soft Scots burr intruded in that it was a<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>a friendly and melifluous commentary voice. OU students often remarked to me how accessible they found the television programmes and the audio cassettes he narrated, even if they did not always agree with his interpretations (James Chapman, Arthur Marwick(1936\u20132006): an appreciation, <em>Historical Journal of Film, Radio and Television<\/em>, Vol. 27, No. 2, June 2007, pp. 237\u2013244 (p240)).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<hr size=\"1\" \/>In 1995, Paddy Maguire saw things differently. Wr<a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/History-of-the-OU\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/marwick.jpg\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-thumbnail wp-image-729\" title=\"marwick\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/History-of-the-OU\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/12\/marwick-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>iting in the <em>Journal\u00a0of Design History<\/em>, 8, 2, p. 155, made public his irritation about &#8216;self-conscious didacticism, tinged with aspiring populism customarily adopted by Open University or schools programmes&#8217; producers, wherein an adoption of the familiar second person is presumed to serve as an aid\u00a0to historical imagination&#8217;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The difficulties of using television to support adult\u00a0learning was a subject often considered at the OU.
