The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.englandnetball.co.uk\/england\/vitality-roses\/\"class=\"externallink_wrapper\" title=\"The Open University is not responsible for external site content\"  >England Roses<span class=\"externallink\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a>\u00a0are looking to build on their successes during the event and are in prime position to challenge for victory at the event played across two weekends.<\/p>\n<p>On Saturday 1 February, in their opening game, they defeated Malawi 62-36. The following day, despite playing better as a team, and being neck and neck with them at the end of every quarter, South Africa just clinched the victory at the end winning by 2 points 59-61.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"injected inline-image-center\"><span class=\"ou-inline-caption-wrap\"><span class=\"ou-inline-image-wrap\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid atto_image_button_middle\" role=\"presentation\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/pluginfile.php\/4517347\/tool_ocwmanage\/articletext\/0\/GettyImages-2197104886.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"injected inline-image-center\"><span class=\"ou-inline-caption-wrap\"><span class=\"inline-image-caption\">Paige Reed of the Roses battles with Martha Dambo of Malawi, 1 February 2025<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The fast-paced invasion sporting competition is being aired live on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skysports.com\/netball\/video\/33787\/13299672\/we-can-be-worlds-best-vitality-roses-eye-up-nations-cup-win\"class=\"externallink_wrapper\" title=\"The Open University is not responsible for external site content\"  >Sky Sports<span class=\"externallink\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a> and should be a thrilling showcase of global netball talent.<\/p>\n<p>Netball is a team sport played primarily by women, where two teams of 7 players each compete to score goals by shooting a ball through a hoop. The court is divided into three sections, and each player is assigned a position which dictates a designated area where they can move and play:<\/p>\n<ul type=\"disc\">\n<li>Goal Shooter (GS)<\/li>\n<li>Goal Attack (GA)<\/li>\n<li>Wing Attack (WA)<\/li>\n<li>Centre (C)<\/li>\n<li>Wing Defence (WD)<\/li>\n<li>Goal Defence (GD)<\/li>\n<li>Goal Keeper (GK)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Only two of the players above can score goals \u2013 Goal Attack (GA) and Goal Shooter (GS). The game is non-contact, with players required to pass the ball to teammates within a few seconds, aiming to create space and opportunities to score. It\u2019s a highly strategic sport that combines athleticism, teamwork, and precision. As one of the world\u2019s top teams, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skysports.com\/netball\/video\/33787\/13299672\/we-can-be-worlds-best-vitality-roses-eye-up-nations-cup-win\"class=\"externallink_wrapper\" title=\"The Open University is not responsible for external site content\"  >Roses\u2019 chances of lifting the trophy were high<span class=\"externallink\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a>, thanks to their recent form, experienced players, and strong leadership under Head Coach \u2013 Jess Thirlby.<\/p>\n<p>In 2023, the Roses secured an impressive bronze medal at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.englandnetball.co.uk\/vitality-roses-win-bronze-at-2023-fast5-netball-world-series\/\"class=\"externallink_wrapper\" title=\"The Open University is not responsible for external site content\"  >Fast5 Netball World Series<span class=\"externallink\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a> and silver in the Netball World Cup, showing their ability to compete against the best in the world. In 2024, England won the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.englandnetball.co.uk\/report\/new-zealand-v-vitality-roses-5\/\"class=\"externallink_wrapper\" title=\"The Open University is not responsible for external site content\"  >Taini Jamison Trophy Series<span class=\"externallink\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a> for a second time. For 2025, the 10-<a href=\"https:\/\/www.englandnetball.co.uk\/england-squad-announced-for-vitality-netball-nations-cup-and-england-a-fixtures\/\"class=\"externallink_wrapper\" title=\"The Open University is not responsible for external site content\"  >strong<span class=\"externallink\">\u00a0<\/span><\/a> squad is quite a new team and has the potential to build on their games this weekend.<\/p>\n<p>With the high-performance training programs and elite level resources, the team is primed for 2025 to take on the world\u2019s top netball nations, including Australia, New Zealand and Jamaica.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"injected inline-image-center\"><span class=\"ou-inline-caption-wrap\"><span class=\"ou-inline-image-wrap\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid atto_image_button_middle\" role=\"presentation\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/pluginfile.php\/4517347\/tool_ocwmanage\/articletext\/0\/GettyImages-2197284110.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"267\" \/><br \/>\n<\/span><span class=\"inline-image-caption\">England v South Africa, 2 February 2025<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Not only have England Roses been among the most talented teams in the sport, but their dedication to women\u2019s sport represents a growing movement in the UK. Netball is unique in that it doesn\u2019t need to be compared to a men\u2019s sport: it stands as a tactical, high-energy and skill-intensive game in its own right. It\u2019s not surprising that it\u2019s experiencing a surge in popularity, and supporting the Roses is an investment in women\u2019s sport, showing that the UK is backing a team capable of making history.
