{"id":74,"date":"2010-08-22T15:52:47","date_gmt":"2010-08-22T15:52:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/SallyJordan\/?p=74"},"modified":"2010-08-26T15:19:12","modified_gmt":"2010-08-26T15:19:12","slug":"adjectives-of-assessment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/SallyJordan\/?p=74","title":{"rendered":"Adjectives of assessment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Writing about the various\u00a0terms used to describe e-assessment made me realise just how littered with adjectives the whole area of assessment is.<\/p>\n<p>We have <strong>formative<\/strong>, <strong>summative<\/strong>, <strong>thresholded<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>diagnostic<\/strong> assessment.<\/p>\n<p>We have <strong>peer<\/strong> assessment and<strong> self<\/strong> assessment, and when you&#8217;re assessing yourself against previous performance, the assessment becomes <strong>ipsative<\/strong>.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>We want assessment to be <strong>authentic<\/strong> and <strong>sustainable <\/strong>and<strong> <\/strong>Stephen Draper has recently defined <strong>catalytic<\/strong> assessment where the &#8216;purpose of test questions is to trigger subsequent deep learning without direct teaching input&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>Assessment has been described as <strong>convergent<\/strong> (one correct answer is required) or <strong>divergent <\/strong>(the answer depends on opinion or analysis); <strong>quantitative <\/strong>(a bit like convergent?) or <strong>qualitative <\/strong>(a bit like divergent?). At this point my understanding of the subtleties is probably\u00a0somewhat flawed.<\/p>\n<p>Assessment experts usually seem to think that convergent is better than divergent and that quantitative is better than divergent. <strong>Objective<\/strong> assessment gets a particularly bad press&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>And so we come full-circle to the hate it\/love it field of <strong>online<\/strong>, <strong>technology-enabled<\/strong>, <strong>computer-assisted<\/strong>, <strong>electronic<\/strong> assessment.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;and I could go on&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>How about setting it all to music?
