Your OU degree is your golden ticket. It opens up a world, not of pure imagination, but of opportunity in the graduate labour market. However, like Charlie and Grandpa Joe in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory<\/em> (Dahl, 1964), you\u2019ve got to overcome obstacles and challenges before you\u2019re given the keys to the factory.<\/p>\n

How valuable is your ticket?<\/h3>\n

OU students make great candidates, and you are no exception. Your OU study demonstrates your self-motivation, commitment to learning, resilience, and passion for your subject. As OU student Catherine says:<\/p>\n

\u201cI’ve actually been asked about being an OU student on every interview that I\u2019ve gone for, I think it’s been one of the things that helped me to get the job because it’s something I can speak really passionately about.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Research shows that employers recognise this value too. One employer in 2019 said:<\/p>\n

\u201cOU graduates have better communication skills; you can just see how those softer skills are a bit finer tuned. To be honest, we\u2019ve saved a lot of time with taking OU graduates on. They show enthusiasm in terms of wanting to learn.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Your OU degree unlocks a range of job options for graduates<\/a>. Remember, most jobs don\u2019t require a specific degree subject either. What\u2019s more important is the transferrable skills you\u2019ve gained through study, so you can take on graduate careers with any degree<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Your skills and qualities<\/h3>\n

Charlie\u2019s ticket only got him so far, he had to demonstrate respectful behaviour before Wonka gave him the chocolate factory. Similarly, your OU degree will grant you access to career opportunities, but your skills and qualities<\/a> will land them. Try a career self-assessment<\/a> or audit your employability skills<\/a> to identify your strengths.<\/p>\n

The recruitment process<\/h3>\n

You\u2019ve got your ticket and identified your skills, but you also need to be prepared for the recruitment process. Willy Wonka took his candidates on a tour of his factory, in what can only be described as an eccentric assessment centre. You probably won\u2019t experience anything that unusual, but it\u2019s important to be prepared for everything a recruitment process might throw at you.
