Not using the careers service<\/h4>\n

It’s a bold statement to say that not using the careers service is my biggest university regret. Back then, navigating my degree was enough to manage without thinking about my career. However, focusing solely on my studies meant neglecting my post-graduation future.<\/p>\n

I never even looked at the careers service that my university offered. Looking back, it would have been the best place to start. Tools like the Navigate Your Future<\/a> activity pathway the OU offers could have helped me explore careers related to my degree<\/a>. While I loved my subject, I had no clue how to use my degree to enter a career aligning with my interests after graduation. I struggled alone, unsure of what job I truly wanted. A careers consultation<\/a> could have provided invaluable guidance on planning my career path<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The tools you wish you had<\/h4>\n

One of the biggest hurdles I faced was crafting a decent CV. Thankfully, the OU’s careers service offers a CV builder and reviewer<\/a> using the power of AI to help with that. And to prepare for your first interview, Interview360<\/a> provides a platform to practice your interview techniques.<\/p>\n

The flexibility of attending or viewing online careers workshops and employer events<\/a> and networking<\/a> online allows you to connect with people across the UK and to learn more about different job roles and sectors<\/p>\n

\nBeyond academia: Skills and experience<\/h4>\n

Not managing my time better to pursue volunteering<\/a> and work experience<\/a> during my studies is another regret. They\u2019re perfect ways to develop your skills and help bridge the gap between your studies and your next career step. The OU’s Careers and Employability Services can help you find flexible opportunities to fit around your busy life through OpportunityHub<\/a>. Careers Express<\/a> is another fantastic resource, providing a one-stop shop for monthly updates on careers events, news, resources, and opportunities.<\/p>\n

\nA winding path with a happy ending<\/h4>\n

Despite a bumpy post-graduation period, I landed in the perfect spot: working on the fantastic OU Careers and Employability Services<\/a> team. I’m now doing fulfilling work, following a career path that puts to work the skills I gained during my degree. So rest easy knowing that even if your career path takes time to unfold, it can eventually lead you to where you want to be.
