Their value is felt every day at all levels in the charity. The volunteer picture looks very different to what it used to pre-Covid. We have seen a big decrease in the average age of our volunteers with lots of people who have just finished college or university, or are currently studying, signing up to volunteer with us.

Find out more about the value of volunteering and how to apply on the Volunteering page in the Help Centre and browse opportunities in the Monthly Volunteering Update.

A range of roles starting small

At Mind BLMK we offer a wide variety of volunteering opportunities as we understand people have different motivations for volunteering and so are looking for different things. Some of our roles offer less commitment with just a few hours a month and others require a bigger time commitment. Regardless of the role, we ensure our volunteers feel their value and in return gain valuable skills, experiences, and training. Many of our staff members started as volunteers with us and some continue their volunteer journey alongside the work they do.

Just bring your own experience

You don’t need experience of working in mental health to volunteer with us. Our only requirements are compassion, empathy, and your own lived experience of mental health struggles which can be your own or someone close to you who you have supported. Lived experience of poor mental health informs everything we do and is a very important part of the delivery of our services.

A sense of purpose

Volunteering is also great for your wellbeing. Studies have shown that giving back to the local community through volunteering can improve your outlook on the world, give you a sense of purpose and connection.

Fits around your time and interests

Volunteering can give you valuable experiences you wouldn’t otherwise have, and it can be fitted around what time you have available. My advice for anyone who doesn’t know what they want to do, who feels they need more real-world experience, who is curious about what’s out there, or just wants to do some good in the world… find something you’re passionate about and volunteer doing that thing.

Volunteering is a gateway to all great things, including employment.

Lauren Booth is the Volunteer Coordinator for the mental health charity Mind BLMK.
