Our recently updated <a href=\"https:\/\/help.open.ac.uk\/becoming-a-teacher\">teaching guides for your nation<\/a> cover what steps you need to take to get into a teaching career in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.<\/p>\n<p><strong>When and how should I apply?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You <strong>should apply as soon as possible<\/strong> to give yourself the best chance of getting the place you want. Applications open in October and deadlines vary between nations. Many OU students will be applying whilst they study their final module. The <a href=\"https:\/\/help.open.ac.uk\/becoming-a-teacher\">teaching guides<\/a> for your nation cover what you need to do to make an application.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where can I find relevant work experience? <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Work experience can range from classroom experience to other forms of education such as coaching, tuition, mentoring and the huge variety in volunteering. Try the <a href=\"https:\/\/opportunityhub.open.ac.uk\/students\/jobs\">Search opportunities<\/a> function on OpportunityHub which has a wide range of paid and voluntary opportunities. Type \u2018education\u2019 as a \u2018keyword\u2019 and use the \u2018Opportunity types\u2019, \u2018Contract hours\u2019 and new \u2018Location\u2019 filters to find what you need.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What application and interview support is available for me?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The nation specific application portals will provide guidance on what they expect but for most you will need to write a well evidenced personal statement. A useful starting point is to consider these questions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Why do you want to become a teacher?<\/li>\n<li>What skills do you have that will make you a good teacher?<\/li>\n<li>What relevant experience do you have?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even the most confident people can feel anxious about an interview.
