{"id":1383,"date":"2018-03-23T10:57:42","date_gmt":"2018-03-23T10:57:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/classicalstudies\/?p=1383"},"modified":"2018-03-23T10:58:24","modified_gmt":"2018-03-23T10:58:24","slug":"rumours-of-our-demise","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/classicalstudies\/?p=1383","title":{"rendered":"Rumours of our demise &#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An article appeared in Thursday\u2019s Guardian (March 22) about proposed curriculum and staffing cuts at the Open University: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/2018\/mar\/21\/open-university-plans-major-cuts-to-number-of-staff-and-courses\">https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/education\/2018\/mar\/21\/open-university-plans-major-cuts-to-number-of-staff-and-courses<br \/>\n<\/a><\/p>\n<p>There is an implication here that Classical Studies as a discipline is at risk or is being cut.<\/p>\n<p>Despite what is said here, you can rest assured that there are NO plans whatsoever to axe Classical Studies at the OU.\u00a0 Our student numbers remain buoyant and we are recruiting to all modules and qualifications as normal.\u00a0 As part of a university-wide review of curriculum there is, indeed, a plan to remove A275 <em>Reading Classical Greek<\/em> following its 2019\/20 presentation, i.e. a year earlier than was initially planned.\u00a0 But while this is regrettable, it\u2019s hardly something that the department was expecting to be front page news.<\/p>\n<p>The VC has already publically rebutted the <em>Guardian<\/em> claims about Classical Studies and has reaffirmed his continued commitment to the discipline.
