{"id":500,"date":"2016-01-06T12:17:52","date_gmt":"2016-01-06T12:17:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/classicalstudies\/?p=500"},"modified":"2016-03-07T15:17:08","modified_gmt":"2016-03-07T15:17:08","slug":"classics-film-and-video-games","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/classicalstudies\/?p=500","title":{"rendered":"Classics, Film and Video Games"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>Sian Beavers is a first year PhD student researching depictions of antiquity in film, TV and videogames and the potential there is for informally learning about classics through these media forms.\u00a0 The following blog post explains some of her reasoning for this research in relation to her <a href=\"https:\/\/openuniversity.onlinesurveys.ac.uk\/history-in-popular-media-pilot\">pilot study<\/a> that is currently underway.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOften representations of Classical content seen in popular culture (such as film, TV or video games) are considered not to be \u201cproper\u201d Classics &#8211; inaccurate, ahistorical, and in some cases &#8211; downright silly.\u00a0 But it is probably fair to say that the reason many of us study Classics, in one way or another, is due at least in part to a pop culture product that influenced us previously.<\/p>\n<p>Whether it was the highly regarded 1976\u00a0TV series,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0074006\/\"><em>I Claudius<\/em><\/a>,\u00a0based on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/I-Claudius-Penguin-Modern-Classics\/dp\/0141188596\">Robert Grave\u2019s book<\/a> of the same name; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Odyssey-Puffin-Classics-Geraldine-McCaughrean\/dp\/0140383093\">a children\u2019s adaptation of <em>The Odyssey<\/em><\/a>; the video games <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ageofempires.com\/\"><em>Age of\u00a0Empires<\/em><\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ageofempires.com\/\"><em>Age of Mythology<\/em><\/a>; or the\u00a0film widely credited with reinvigorating the \u2018sword and sandal\u2019 epic, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0172495\/\"><em>Gladiator<\/em><\/a>: by now hopefully few can doubt the impact that historical representations in popular culture have on our interest, perceptions and understandings of the ancient world.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-503\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/classicalstudies\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/01\/Ryse-Arena.jpg\" alt=\"Ryse Arena\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/>In the modern world, these re-workings of ancient content and material must also be considered re-mediations, in that they not only reference ancient sources but also borrow tropes (in story\/content decisions as well as aesthetic representations) from other media. For example, the arena scenes that were so iconic in the film <em>Gladiator<\/em> are now familiar to us precisely because they have been reproduced in an array of other media with similar content: the TV Series <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1442449\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\"><em>Spartacus<\/em><\/a><em>;<\/em> HBO\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0384766\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\"><em>Rome<\/em><\/a>; as well as the videogames <a href=\"http:\/\/www.crytek.com\/games\/ryse\/overview\"><em>Ryse: Son of Rome<\/em><\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/SEGA-Spartan-Total-Warrior-PS2\/dp\/B0009WXQCI\"><em>Spartan: Total Warrior<\/em><\/a>, amongst many other film, TV and videogame adaptations. This trope has become something that <em>we expect<\/em> to see when we engage with media that represents ancient Rome.<\/p>\n<p>Some may question my inclusion of videogames as a legitimate media form for representing the past, but when one considers that <em>Ryse: Son of Rome<\/em>, a launch title for the Xbox One sold in 2014 alone more than <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gamespot.com\/articles\/crytek-we-are-not-100-happy-with-xbox-one-sales\/1100-6421586\/\">5 million copies<\/a> and the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/assassinscreed.ubi.com\/en-gb\/home\/\">Assassin\u2019s Creed<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>franchise more than <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gamespot.com\/articles\/assassin-s-creed-franchise-sold-73-million-copies\/1100-6419100\/\">73 million<\/a>, we cannot deny the popularity and wide-spread effects of the historical videogame genre, or more so that videogames are a new historical form that have the ability to portray <strong><em>a\u00a0<\/em><\/strong>history, even if <strong><em>the<\/em><\/strong> history can be said to exist.<\/p>\n<p>My PhD research with the Open University is concerned with how people engage with these historical representations in popular culture, and how audiences&#8217; and players\u2019 understanding of the past are shaped by them. What opportunities for learning do the different forms (TV, film, videogame) offer? How is this related to how the form structures the content?\u00a0 What specific media forms or products are considered to be the \u2018best\u2019 for learning about antiquity, the most entertaining, or more authentic? This is not to say that that this is merely research into the historical accuracy of a form or product, but the audience-player <em>perceptions<\/em> of it. For example, videogames have received much criticism over the last couple of years because of how women are represented. In a historical videogame, do the players believe that the representations of women align with the history? (\u201cThat\u2019s how women were treated at the time\u2026.\u201d) Or are they aware, as <a href=\"http:\/\/eu.wiley.com\/WileyCDA\/WileyTitle\/productCd-1405151676.html\">Hardwick and Stray note<\/a>, that representations of Classical content in modern culture shed more light on the receiving society than on the ancient context?<\/p>\n<p>The research as a whole will start answering some of these questions, through beginning with a Pilot Study that investigates audience and player perceptions of their learning through different forms and products; the viewer\/player practices while engaging with these media forms (\u201cDo you watch\/play alone, or with people?\u201d, \u201cDo you post to blogs or social media in response to the content?\u201d); and the longer lasting effects of engaging with such media (\u201cHas a TV show\/film\/game ever inspired you to research the history of it more?\u201d). This will allow the narrowing and focussing of a research area that has the potential to be gigantic.<\/p>\n<p>Although at this point I have ensured that the questions in the survey (mostly in a mercenary attempt to increase response rate) relate to \u2018general history\u2019 as opposed to antiquity specifically, I am very keen to receive responses from Classicists in order to begin answering some of these questions, both because your perceptions of these media forms and products will be extremely interesting, as well as the fact the research as a whole will ultimately be looking at representations of antiquity in popular culture.<\/p>\n<p>I hope that you could spare 10 minutes or less to aid me in this research and <a href=\"https:\/\/openuniversity.onlinesurveys.ac.uk\/history-in-popular-media-pilot\">do this brief questionnaire<\/a>, and if it might be something that a friend or colleague would be interested in, pass it on to them too.
