The theme resonated deeply: redefining higher education through new learning methods, the impact of technology like AI, and evolving employer needs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However,\u00a0it was the call for student experiences that truly drew me in.\u00a0As an online learner,\u00a0I&#8217;ve always wondered:\u00a0how can universities foster a sense of belonging in a virtual world?\u00a0My application reflected on my journey beyond the traditional student union experience,\u00a0focusing on alternative ways to enhance learning and create value for students.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meeting the other student panellists and discussing diverse viewpoints enriched the conference&#8217;s theme of student belonging.\u00a0The multitude of research projects showcased from across the higher education sector offered a valuable learning experience,\u00a0especially considering the OU&#8217;s online environment.\u00a0Reflecting on these presentations,\u00a0a realization struck me:\u00a0the virtual learning experience at the OU can often feel isolating for many students.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The conference was a whirlwind of presentations and workshops.\u00a0My favourite,\u00a0from Queen Mary University London, presented a holistic framework for student life cycle,\u00a0empowering students to co-create and evaluate their experiences. This project highlighted the impact of a supportive academic environment on retention,\u00a0achievement,\u00a0and overall well-being.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The student panel discussion,\u00a0held on the final day,\u00a0delved into crucial aspects of belonging in HE institutions:<\/p>\n<ul style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<li><strong>Creating a sense of belonging from day one<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Capturing the student voice<\/strong>\u00a0through collaboration in curriculum activities,\u00a0assessment development,\u00a0and rewarding contributions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The full student life cycle approach<\/strong>\u00a0to belonging<\/li>\n<li><strong>Understanding neurodiversity<\/strong>\u00a0and its impact on belonging<\/li>\n<li><strong>Imposter syndrome<\/strong>\u00a0as a barrier<\/li>\n<li><strong>Student partnership and recreation<\/strong>\u00a0and the value of consistent feedback<\/li>\n<li><strong>Student-designed spaces<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sharing my own experiences \u2013 the OU&#8217;s Virtual Internship,\u00a0Annual Design Show participation,\u00a0and being a student researcher with eSTEeM \u2013 added an online learning perspective to the discussion.\u00a0The fast-paced frugal, enlightening and challenging exchange captured the true spirit of the conference, further enhanced by using Padlet for live Q&amp;A.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-5210\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Cindy-ad-AdvHETLConf2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Cindy-ad-AdvHETLConf2.jpg 640w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Cindy-ad-AdvHETLConf2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The launch of Advance HE&#8217;s Essential Frameworks for Enhancing Students&#8217; Success resonated as well,\u00a0with its transformative approach promising to unlock student potential through flexible,\u00a0systematic methods.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now,\u00a0brimming with new contacts and knowledge,\u00a0I&#8217;m left with a question:\u00a0how can STEM faculty and students collaborate to address the unique challenges of fostering a sense of belonging within the OU&#8217;s online environment?<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is where you come in!\u00a0Share your thoughts in the comments below \u2013 let&#8217;s work together to break down the barriers and build a stronger online community.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A guest article by Cindy Darbandi\u00a0 &nbsp; As a recent Design graduate from the OU&#8217;s School of Engineering and Innovation, I had the incredible opportunity to participate as a student speaker at the Advance HE Annual Teaching and Learning conference in Nottingham this July (2nd-4th).
