{"id":569,"date":"2017-11-22T16:58:36","date_gmt":"2017-11-22T16:58:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/?p=569"},"modified":"2018-01-08T20:34:40","modified_gmt":"2018-01-08T20:34:40","slug":"smart-and-modern-materials","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/smart-and-modern-materials\/","title":{"rendered":"Smart and Modern Materials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cWe may not yet have the flying car that science fiction promised us,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ted.com\/2012\/09\/21\/tinker-tailor-solderer-fellows-friday-with-catarina-mota\/\" >Catarina Mota<\/a> (TEDGlobal 2012). \u201cBut we can have walls that change color depending on temperature, keyboards that roll up, and windows that become opaque at the flick of a switch.\u201d In\u00a0this<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/catarina_mota_play_with_smart_materials\" ><strong> TED Talk<\/strong><\/a> video Moto\u00a0shows some interesting examples.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.ted.com\/5-smart-materials-from-inks-that-conduct-electricity-to-acrylic-that-diffuses-lights\/\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-584\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/image-1.1.-blog-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/image-1.1.-blog-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/image-1.1.-blog-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/image-1.1.-blog-960x540.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/image-1.1.-blog.jpg 1366w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The notion of what this means for the artefacts that incorporate\u00a0smart or modern materials,\u00a0and the parameters that constrain designers becomes, in my opinion, increasingly elastic.<\/p>\n<p>I have been fascinated by smart and modern materials ever since I first played with a piece of smart nitinol wire in 1996 and squeezed my first piece of smart memory foam. I still feel awe when I see new ones evolve and unfurl into our world. Smart nitinol wire and smart memory foam are just two of many smart and modern materials around.<\/p>\n<p>5 smart materials;\u00a0 inks that conduct electricity, thermochromic pigments, electrotextiles and acrylics that diffuse light are showcased <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/catarina_mota_play_with_smart_materials\" ><strong>in this TED talk video here.<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a> At the time of this 2012 video, Catarina Moto enthuses about how this expands the capacity to make awesome things but finds that information is sparse, in terms of how they are produced and how they work, or might be used. She co-created <a href=\"http:\/\/openmaterials.org\/\" >OpenMaterials.org<\/a> for people to share exactly this on.<\/p>\n<p>With respect to how smart and modern materials work, I have been part of a\u00a02 year project at a secondary school level to educate teachers and students in 100 schools to \u2018unpack the Science behind\u2019 a range of these, funded by a Lord Mayor STEM fund. An understanding of this demystifies them considerably and is I feel\u00a0desirable in order to use them effectively.<\/p>\n<p>In terms of learning how others are using and intend to use them, my observation is that\u00a0examples and experiments are constantly popping up across social media platforms, which is \u00a0exciting!<\/p>\n<p>Here are some of my personal favorites which expand on Moto\u2019s examples:<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Glow in the Dark (Phosphorescent Pigments)<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-571\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/maiko-headpiece-300x201.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/maiko-headpiece-300x201.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/maiko-headpiece-768x514.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/maiko-headpiece.jpg 786w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Maiko Takeda is a Japanese millinery designer and showcased a series of spectacular sculptural headpieces covered in acetate bristles and hand painted with Glow in the dark pigments as part of her MA collection. Takeda moved to London in 2005 to study and completed a BA in jewellery design at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/tag\/central-saint-martins\" >Central Saint Martins<\/a>, and then a \u00a0MA in millinery at the RCA. \u201cWhat I love about London is that I get to meet people from all over the world with different cultural backgrounds and perspectives,\u201d \u201cIt makes me realise who I am and frees up my mind, which doesn&#8217;t often happen in Tokyo, being mostly surrounded by Japanese people\u201d (Dazed, July 2012).She is currently an accessories designer. for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dazeddigital.com\/tag\/issey-miyake\" >Issey Miyake<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/road.cc\/content\/news\/96953-video-cambridge-gets-worlds-first-glow-dark-path-coming-soon-city-near-you\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-573\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/starpath-Pro-Teq-glow-pavement-2-300x216.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"216\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/starpath-Pro-Teq-glow-pavement-2-300x216.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/starpath-Pro-Teq-glow-pavement-2.jpg 678w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A British company <strong><em>ProTeq<\/em><\/strong> Lighting have developed Starpath, a spray-on <strong><em>glow in the dark<\/em><\/strong> system that lights up pathways at night. It is being trialled in Christ\u2019s Pieces Park in Cambridge and has potential for bike paths and footpaths there and elsewhere. The UV crystals absorbs UV light in the daytime and then releases this energy as light at night in an ethereal way in this picture (8 May 2016) and there is more information in a<a href=\"http:\/\/road.cc\/content\/news\/96953-video-cambridge-gets-worlds-first-glow-dark-path-coming-soon-city-near-you\" ><strong> video available here<\/strong> <\/a>(MacMichael, 2013).<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Shape Memory Alloy Futuristic Spacesuit<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-577\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/image-4-blog-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/image-4-blog-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/image-4-blog-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/image-4-blog-960x540.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/image-4-blog.jpg 1366w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Historically, an astronaut wears a bulky suit, pressurised by gas. MIT (funded by NASA and the MIT Portugal Program) have designed a lighter weight stretchy spacesuit that is more like a second skin. Their version is lined with a network of coils of Smart Memory Alloy Coils.<\/p>\n<p>Shape-memory alloy (SMA) are sometimes known as smart wire or nitinol wire and as with all smart materials, it \u201cremembers\u201d a shape that it has been set or made to, and when curved, stretched or deformed in different ways or as a result of different stimuli (e.g. but not limited to heat\/moisture\/chemical change\/ heat etc.) it will be able to return to its original shape\u00a0once the stimulus is removed. In essence, when this SMA suit\u00a0is\u00a0 plugged in to a power supply, the coils will contract, thus \u00a0hug and support the body like a second skin (Chu, 2014).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/teddesigns\/2863623069\/in\/photostream\/\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-579\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/image-5.1-blog-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/image-5.1-blog-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/image-5.1-blog-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/image-5.1-blog-960x540.jpg 960w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/image-5.1-blog.jpg 1366w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Ted Ulrich shows some playful \u2018tests\u2019 with smart memory wire <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/teddesigns\/2863623069\/in\/photostream\/\" ><strong>in flickr videos (available by scrolling left and right\u00a0 once the first one opens) here<\/strong> <\/a><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Not only fun to watch, they give a sense of the wire contraction possible and the related movement.
