Theme 1: Agency and responsibilities

When considering how virtual assistants and AI-based technologies could support disabled students in the context of current practices, questions arise such as:

  • What role(s) should a virtual assistant play? Is it working independently on behalf of each student? Is it an agent of the institution which represents the processes and policies decided by staff. Could it be a mediator between these two?
  • How could an assistant enhance the agency of the student? For example supporting them to receive support they are entitled to more easily, or increasing their independence.
  • How would a system best be maintained and enhanced? Who should be responsible for it and how can students or staff contribute?
  • What motivations and potential benefits are there to the system, and how will this influence stakeholders to engage?
