The aim of the group is to investigate the relationship between language, literature (literary criticism and creative writing) and politics in the widest variety of contexts.<\/p>\n<p>Co-directors\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fass.open.ac.uk\/people\/dwj24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"5\" >Professor\u00a0David\u00a0Johnson<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wels.open.ac.uk\/people\/ps4549\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"6\" >Dr Philip Seargeant<\/a>\u00a0founded the new research group to give oxygen to interdisciplinary research conversations and initiatives, and they see it as an exciting opportunity for new and interesting synergies to emerge.<\/p>\n<p>The group launched with an online literary event featuring author\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/literature.britishcouncil.org\/writer\/jim-crace\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"7\" >Jim Crace<\/a>, who read from his Booker-shortlisted novel,\u00a0<i>Harvest<\/i>, and spoke to OU Lecturer in Creative Writing and fellow novelist, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/research\/people\/ecs245\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"8\" >Dr\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/research\/people\/ecs245\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-auth=\"NotApplicable\" data-linkindex=\"8\" >Emma Claire Sweeney<\/a>, about the interrelationship between politics and language in his own work.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"An interview with Jim Crace\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kcjk7RRfIIc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; book to examine the terms and concepts that act as touchstones for today&#8217;s society.<\/p>\n<p>Williams describes a keyword as one for which &#8216;the problems of its meanings seem inextricably bound up with the problems it&#8217;s being used to discuss.&#8217; So the act of defining the word is part of the process of exploring and arguing for the values that the concept represents.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"A brief word about KEYWORDS\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/V4tacoqwADc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer;
