On our\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/about.open.ac.uk\/strategy-and-policies\/policies-and-statements\/website-accessibility-open-university\">Accessibility hub<\/a>, you&#8217;ll find everything you need to answer any questions you have about accessibility, whether you&#8217;re a student or a member of staff.<\/p>\n<p>To adapt the content to your needs or preferences you should be able to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Change colours, contrasts levels and fonts.<\/li>\n<li>Resize text up to 200% without impact on the functionality of the website.<\/li>\n<li>Zoom in up to 400% without loss of information or functionality.<\/li>\n<li>Navigate the website using just a keyboard.\n<ul>\n<li>tab to \u2018Skip to content\u2019 links at the top of the page to jump over repetitive information to the main content.<\/li>\n<li>tab through the content; the current location will be indicated by a clear visual change.<\/li>\n<li>control the embedded media player to play audio and video materials.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Use a screen reader (e.g., JAWs, NVDA) to:\n<ul>\n<li>listen to the content of web pages and use any functionality on the page.<\/li>\n<li>list the headings and subheadings in the page and then jump to their location on the page.<\/li>\n<li>bring up a list of meaningful links on the page.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Use transcripts or closed captions with most audio and video\u00a0materials.<\/li>\n<li>Download learning materials in alternative formats (e.g., Word document, PDF, ePub).<\/li>\n<li>If you have a print disability we provide\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/libraryservices\/subsites\/sensusaccess\/convert-a-file-with-sensus-access\">SensusAccess <\/a>to students, which is an automated service that converts files from one format to another, for example, PDF to text, audio, Word or Braille.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/mcmw.abilitynet.org.uk\/\">AbilityNet <\/a>also provides advice on making your device easier to use if you have a disability.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Compliance status<\/h2>\n<p>The website\u00a0is partially compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2\u00a0AA standard, due to the non-compliance listed below.<\/p>\n<h2>Non-accessible content<\/h2>\n<p>The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reason(s):<\/p>\n<h3>Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations<\/h3>\n<h4>External websites<\/h4>\n<p>The Open University provided links to external websites that may not meet accessibility standards. This also includes embedded content from third-party providers (social media, etc.), as well as audio and\/or video players.<\/p>\n<h4>Form missing label statement.<\/h4>\n<p>Some form fields do not have programmatically related labels. People using a screen reader and people using voice recognition software will find it harder to navigate to and understand form fields. This fails\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/WCAG22\/Understanding\/info-and-relationships.html\">WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.3.1 Info and Relationships (Level A)<\/a>\u00a0and will be resolved by the end of August 2026.<\/p>\n<h4>Colour contrast of text to background<\/h4>\n<p>Some text does not provide enough contrast with the background, making it more difficult to read for people with low vision. This fails\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/WCAG22\/Understanding\/contrast-minimum\">WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.4.3 Contrast (Minimum) (Level AA)<\/a>\u00a0and will be resolved by the end of August 2026.<\/p>\n<h4>Image alternative text<\/h4>\n<p>Some purely presentational images have not been marked as decorative within the code. People using a screen reader won\u2019t be able to ignore these images. This fails\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/WCAG22\/Understanding\/non-text-content\">WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.1.1: Non-text Content (Level A)<\/a>\u00a0and will be resolved by the end of August 2026.<\/p>\n<p>Some images which convey meaning do not have an informative text alternative to adequately describe their purpose. People using a screen reader won\u2019t be able to access the information. This fails\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/WCAG22\/Understanding\/non-text-content\">WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.1.1: Non-text Content (Level A)<\/a>\u00a0and will be resolved by the end of August 2026.<\/p>\n<h4>Headings and content structure<\/h4>\n<p>Some page headings aren&#8217;t structured in a logical way. People using screen readers will find it more difficult to navigate and understand the structure of content. This fails\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/WCAG22\/Understanding\/info-and-relationships\">WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.3.1 Info and Relationships (Level A)<\/a>\u00a0and will be resolved by the end of August 2026.<\/p>\n<h4>Image alternative text<\/h4>\n<p>Some images which convey meaning do not have an informative text alternative to adequately describe their purpose. People using a screen reader won\u2019t be able to access the information. This fails\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/WCAG22\/Understanding\/non-text-content\">WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 1.1.1: Non-text Content (Level A)<\/a>\u00a0and will be resolved by the end of August 2026.<\/p>\n<h4>Link context and destination<\/h4>\n<p>Some link text does not provide enough information about the destination of the link. This makes it difficult for people using a screen reader to know where the link will take them, particularly if they are reading links out of context, (e.g., in a list of links). This fails\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.w3.org\/WAI\/WCAG22\/Understanding\/link-purpose-in-context.html\">WCAG 2.2 Success Criterion 2.4.4\u202fLink Purpose (Level AA)<\/a>\u00a0and will be resolved by the end of August 2026.<\/p>\n<h3>The content is not within the scope of the accessibility regulations.<\/h3>\n<p>The below list identifies the content which has been deemed out of scope due to being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/make-your-website-or-app-accessible-and-publish-an-accessibility-statement#make-a-plan-to-fix-any-accessibility-problems\">exempt from the accessibility regulations<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Pre-recorded audio and video published before 23 September 2020.<\/li>\n<li>Heritage collections like scanned manuscripts.<\/li>\n<li>PDFs or other documents published before 23 September 2018.<\/li>\n<li>Third party content that\u2019s under someone else\u2019s control.<\/li>\n<li>Content published before 23 September 2019 and no (major) revision after that date.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Preparation of this accessibility statement<\/h2>\n<p>This statement was prepared on\u00a010 July 2024.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0statement was\u00a0last reviewed on\u00a05 August 2025.<\/p>\n<p>This\u00a0website\u00a0was last tested on\u00a010 July 2024.<\/p>\n<p>The preparation and evaluation of the Digital Humanities website was carried out by the FASS Web team.<\/p>\n<p>This website was tested using the Accessibility Compliance Toolkit (ACT) which is an internal toolkit used to identify and check web pages for accessibility by conducting basic accessibility testing. This basic testing covers essential aspects of accessibility, but it doesn\u2019t include all the WCAG 2.2 Level AA Success Criteria.\u00a0Using the ACT combines manual checks with automated tests across a sample of pages identified as being representative of most or all of the components used on the website. The accessibility testing conducted on this website includes evaluating alternative text, colour contrast, content resizing, content structure, form labels, language of page, link text, keyboard navigation, captions and skip links.<\/p>\n<p>The following accessibility testing methods and tools were used:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>W3C (World Wide Web Consortium) checks (alternative text, content structure, language of page, keyboard navigation, skip links)<\/li>\n<li>axe DevTools automated checker (colour contrast, form labels, link text)<\/li>\n<li>Manual checks (content resizing, captions).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Feedback and contact information<\/h2>\n<p>If you find that a certain section of our website is not accessible and you can\u2019t get access to the information that you need please use the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/forms.office.com\/Pages\/ResponsePage.aspx?id=VdQuDq-WAEG-06jl_ZgWhZZerd7KTdxLs5rJWOBff-tUMTNNTTMyUzhBOEYxTEw2ODUyM0pWOUtPWS4u\">Open University Accessibility Feedback Form<\/a>\u00a0to request support and we will ensure that you are provided with the information you require. You will need to provide your contact details and Personal Identifier if you are a student so we can get back to you. You should expect to hear back from us within 5 working days.<\/p>\n<p>The OU is very experienced in meeting accessibility needs for our students.
