{"id":160,"date":"2018-07-20T15:40:26","date_gmt":"2018-07-20T14:40:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/learning-design\/?p=160"},"modified":"2020-08-07T16:24:15","modified_gmt":"2020-08-07T15:24:15","slug":"learning-analytics-the-patchwork-quilt-visualisation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/learning-design\/?p=160","title":{"rendered":"Learning analytics: the patchwork quilt visualisation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the Open University, we have developed a suite of LA (Learning Analytics) visualisations called \u2018Action for Analytics&#8217; (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.heacademy.ac.uk\/system\/files\/hub\/download\/Advance%20HE%20Surveys%20Conference%202018%20-%20Using%20analytics%20to%20inform%20evidence-based%20interventions%20-%20Gerald%20Evans%20and%20Rafael%20Hidalgo.pdf\" >A4A: slides from a presentation giving more detail<\/a>) designed to help those responsible for producing modules to see the effects of their designs.\u00a0 For example, it\u2019s possible to track just how much use videos we produce for the module get watched and therefore see whether doing more would be a good investment.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_161\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-161\" style=\"width: 863px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-161 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/learning-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Sample-LA-from-the-OU.gif\" alt=\"sample learning analytics graph of students resource use with time from OU module\" width=\"863\" height=\"281\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-161\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tracking how many students have accessed a particular section of the module in any week. Weeks along the bottom and blue bars are weeks with Assignments in them.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This has been very successful with our colleagues outside the Learning Design team (mostly academics) being able to track what is going on with their modules real time and also see the effects of changes as they are bought in.<\/p>\n<p>However, the tool is limited to a set of &#8216;baked in&#8217; dashboards so its not possible to split the above data into students who ended up failing the module from those who passed and compare the two graphs.\u00a0 This could give useful insight into the value of individual parts of a module and also if students are accessing it or not.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Drilling down into the data:\u00a0<\/strong> A4A isn\u2019t the only route to exploring statistics about students on modules.\u00a0 There are a number of databases underlying the visualisations and these can be accessed directly by specialist staff.\u00a0 Using our access rights, we have been experimenting with producing bespoke visualisations not in the current suite that we think could help those writing and designing modules.\u00a0 These are currently prototypes but show some promise:<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_162\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-162\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-162 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/learning-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/PatchworkQ.gif\" alt=\"Screenshot showing patchwork quilt visualisation\" width=\"600\" height=\"232\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-162\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Patchwork quilt visualisation.
