{"id":619,"date":"2020-08-21T16:48:20","date_gmt":"2020-08-21T15:48:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/learning-design\/?p=619"},"modified":"2021-05-28T11:31:15","modified_gmt":"2021-05-28T10:31:15","slug":"engagement-with-others-online-students-view-of-course-design","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/learning-design\/?p=619","title":{"rendered":"Engagement with others online: students\u2019 views of course design"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">As learning designers, it\u2019s essential that we\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">explore\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">students<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019 needs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0and goals<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That way, we can make sure that learning activities\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">address these needs and support students to reach their goals. For example, each time we design a new module, we take time to explore\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">student data and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">course teams\u2019 experience to build up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/learning-design\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/07\/Student-Profile-form-v2-updated-June-2018-1.pdf\" >student profiles or personas <\/a>that can be referred to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">throughout<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">module design<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0process<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It&#8217;s also important that we understand students\u2019 experiences of their learning<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, such as\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the times and day<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">they study, and how and if they work with other students.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Without this, we risk making assumptions that could\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">cause students to struggle or even drop out.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">our\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Learn<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Experience<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0&amp; Technology<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">team<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0conducted a series of focus groups with students at\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a range\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">distance learning institutions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, including the OU<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This post takes a look at what they learnt.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">How do students view their courses?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he focus groups were a small sample size in total (only 22 students<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eight\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">from\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the OU\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">14 from a range of other distance learning providers)\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">but\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">they<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">did provide an opportunity to find out how\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">some\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">students see their courses when given an opportunity to talk about their experiences<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The six hours of students talking provided a lot more data that didn\u2019t make it into the videos.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0Mark Childs, a lecturer in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">microcredentials<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and technology enhanced learning at\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">the\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">OU\u2019s Institute of Educational Technology, analysed the data\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to identify trends<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and other information that could inform our work.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">What does face-to-face teaching mean?<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mark\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">analysed the students separately depending on whether they were\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/OpenUniversity\/status\/1293872595411120128?s=20\" ><span data-contrast=\"none\">under 30 or over 30<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0(30 was the median age), to look for differences in their experiences<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">T<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">wo stood out:<\/span><span tend<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to have jobs\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0have less flexibility, so the synchronous elements\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">tend to be<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0less accessible for them<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">face-to-face<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0to describe videoconferencing<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2013<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he logic being you can see the other person\u2019s face.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I\u2019ve noticed this last one before, in a project I did at Loughborough University<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">,\u2019 Mark says. \u2018<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I now try and drop using the phrase \u201cface-to-face\u201d as it\u2019s obviously ambiguous,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">use \u201cco-located\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2013 meaning physically present \u2013\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">instead. However, it\u2019s difficult to stop the habit.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To provide some focus to the analysis,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mark<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0looked at how\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the students<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0engaged with other people.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He used\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">qualitative analysis\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to review\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the transcripts<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, then\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">identif<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ied<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0themes\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">and grouped\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">similar\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ones\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">together.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">What emerged was that the students saw their engagement with others on the course as being in three main scenarios:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Synchronous o<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ne-to-ones with tutors<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Synchronous sessions with tutorial groups led by a tutor<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Asynchronous discussions with other students<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">The students\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">also talked about a fourth strand that they created for themselves.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Only\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">two<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0of the 22 students\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">said they\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">had an opportunity to meet others on their course<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0in the same space<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0these were one from the University of Sheffield and one from\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">the OU<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. The others<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0felt they missed out on th<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">is<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">experience<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, so many of them talked about how they had created their own opportunities for doing this.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">It\u2019s important to note that students may not\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have been aware of the course design element<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. They could also have\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">forgotten it, or just\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">not<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0mention<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ed<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0it when asked. And of course, there\u2019s no way the views of 22 students can represent all the students at those universities. However,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0provides an interesting start for a more representative study.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Course design is just the beginning<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Mark\u2019s research also suggested that c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ourse design doesn\u2019t end with what we provide to the student. Students take what we provide and re-create it to suit themselves.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Examples of how other students had created their own co-located learning experiences were<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">:<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"1\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Physical social learning spaces. Two of the younger non-OU students\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">had\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">visited Google Campus, which is a place in London where technology start-ups have an office space, but anyone can use the downstairs caf\u00e9. This meant that\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">there were people around who were working and studying and could offer advice. It was also an atmosphere that they felt supported their learning<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, because it offered both social and quiet areas.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Creating their own blend of spaces. The older non-OU students didn\u2019t discuss Google Campus but did talk about how they mixed libraries, cafes and their offices\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">to create\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">a blend of different types of spaces to work in to meet their needs for quiet but shared places and more social shared spaces.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"4\" aria-setsize=\"-1\" data-aria-posinset=\"3\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Creating their own co-located peer groups.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One of the younger OU students filled in for her lack of co-located contact with others by identifying others through the module\u2019s Facebook group and arranging to meet up with them in a monthly study group.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, the key element of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">all of<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0these co-located learning spaces\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">was<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">that they were a) convenient and b)\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">low<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0cost<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This was\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">consisten<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0across both age groups, and\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">both O<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">U and non-OU students<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">n other words,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">meeting other learners in a physical space is something learners like to do,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">but\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">it<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u2019<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">s not considered worth it if they\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">have to<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0travel a long way or pay for it.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Creating connections<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">One element that particularly needs further investigation is that some of these students who created their own co-located groups were also those who weren\u2019t taking advantage of the online discussions<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0with other students.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Many of them stated that they would value co-located social learning because it enable<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">d<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0them to touch base with the course providers and to meet fellow students.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">This<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0raises the question as to how these opportunities are presented in their\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">interactions with teachers and students during their module study.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">So far, t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">he study has raised some interesting areas for further investigation, and a potential framework from which to conduct\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">this.
