Very difficult to describe in words. The award recognises her exceptional contribution to education and culture, as Elaine is a leading writer, sociologist and speaker on diversity and empowerment \u2013 despite living with a life-threatening illness. In her <a href=\"https:\/\/sites.google.com\/view\/elainesiheraconsulting\/elaine-sihera\/elaines-acceptance-speech-for-doctor-of-the-ou?authuser=0\">acceptance speech<\/a>, she said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;I was brought up in poverty in Jamaica in the sixties, with a father who didn\u2019t want girls, only boys. But my positivity, dreams, and strong belief in myself propelled me forward in a way I never dreamt possible. After all, if someone had told me then, that I would go to England, get a degree from a pioneering university, and the opportunity to attend Cambridge University, I would have laughed at them in disbelief.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Elaine Sihera - Education took me out of poverty\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/X6FQg-0jZEs?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #0d0d0d; font-size: 1.6em; font-weight: bold;\">At the forefront of diversity issues<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A pioneer in many ways, Elaine is at the forefront of diversity issues, presenting the first Diversity Lecture in the House of Commons, and founding both the British Diversity Awards and the Windrush Achievement Awards.\u00a0Elaine was the first Black woman in the UK to own a national magazine and has enjoyed a successful career spanning education, diversity, personal development and leadership.<\/p>\n<p>Elaine is a huge advocate for self-belief and motivation, and\u00a0has authored four books on lifestyle issues, including <em>The Essential Guide to Confidence <\/em>and<em> Managing the Diversity Maze.\u00a0<\/em>Here, she speaks of the need for everyone to have self-belief:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Elaine Sihera - Self belief\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/6lF7BpbsJMg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14px; color: #414141;\">Elaine concludes: \u201cThe Open University changed my life completely, in ways too magical to comprehend.
