{"id":10821,"date":"2018-10-31T16:56:39","date_gmt":"2018-10-31T16:56:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=10821"},"modified":"2018-10-31T16:56:39","modified_gmt":"2018-10-31T16:56:39","slug":"pro-bono-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/business-law\/law\/pro-bono-awards\/","title":{"rendered":"Open University free law clinic highly commended at pro bono legal awards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/law-school.open.ac.uk\/open-justice\/get-legal-advice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Open Justice Centre\u2019s Law Clinic<\/a>, which offers free online legal advice led by OU students supervised by qualified solicitors, was highly commended in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lawworks.org.uk\/solicitors-and-volunteers\/get-involved\/lawworks-annual-pro-bono-awards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LawWorks Annual Pro Bono Awards<\/a>. They received their award in the \u2018Best new pro bono activity\u2019 category at the award ceremony at the Law Society in London on Monday 3 December.<\/p>\n<p>Francine Ryan, Lecturer in Law and member of the Open Justice Centre, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">\u201cThis accolade is wonderful recognition for everyone\u2019s hard work since the Law Clinic was launched in September 2017. We were delighted to be shortlisted and then to receive this commendation in such a tough category with some great competition is fantastic news.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">\u201cThe Law Clinic has already seen 50 of our very own law students offer free online advice sessions, supervised by qualified solicitors, to help the general public resolve their particular legal issue. These can range from contractual disputes to clinical negligence, civil litigation to building claims, and consumer rights to small claims. This helps promote the concept of \u2018Open Justice\u2019 with the Centre going from strength to strength since it was launched a little more than two years ago.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; color: #414141; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Segoe UI',sans-serif; font-size: 10.5pt;\">The awards evening was hosted the radio and television presenter, producer and writer, Matthew Stadlen. A vocal and successful campaigner for social justice, Tottenham MP David Lammy, delivered the annual lecture. He has led the campaign for the \u2018Windrush generation\u2019 to be granted British citizenship and paid compensation, while also being at the forefront of the fight for justice for the Grenfell Tower fire families.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; color: #414141; line-height: 115%; font-family: 'Segoe UI',sans-serif; font-size: 10.5pt;\">The Open Justice Centre was represented at the awards by Keren Lloyd Bright who has responsibility for the prison projects, associate lecturer Andrew Maxfield who teaches on the \u2018W360: Justice in Action\u2019 module and Law alumnus Ken Ragon-Chambers who works as a student adviser in the Law Clinic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h3>About LawWorks<\/h3>\n<p>LawWorks is a charity committed to enabling access to justice through free legal advice.
