{"id":11015,"date":"2018-11-29T10:38:27","date_gmt":"2018-11-29T10:38:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ounews.co\/?p=11015"},"modified":"2018-11-29T10:38:27","modified_gmt":"2018-11-29T10:38:27","slug":"food-banks-in-demand-as-pensioners-highlighted-as-one-of-the-most-vulnerable-age-groups","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/education-languages-health\/health\/food-banks-in-demand-as-pensioners-highlighted-as-one-of-the-most-vulnerable-age-groups\/","title":{"rendered":"Food banks in demand as pensioners highlighted as one of the most vulnerable age groups"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Britain\u2019s largest food bank, <u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/uk\/home-news\/food-bank-use-uk-christmas-poverty-universal-credit-benefits-austerity-trussell-trust-report-a8652666.html\">The Trussell Trust<\/a><\/u>\u00a0has reported that it provided almost 160,000 three-day emergency supplies in December last year, a 49% increase on the monthly average.<\/p>\n<p>As this winter looks to be another busy year for food banks across the country, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/people\/amg678\">Dr Aravinda Meera Guntupalli<\/a>, Senior Lecturer in Public Health at The Open University, investigates the most vulnerable demographic: pensioners.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Despite the relatively mild winters experienced in the UK, the death rates during the winter\u00a0months are much greater than those seen in countries with harsher climates. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.e3g.org\/library\/cold-homes-and-excess-winter-deaths-a-preventable-public-health-epidemic\">UK is the 6th poorest performer<\/a> among 30 European countries in excess winter mortality, and after adjusting for the cold weather, the UK becomes the second poorest performer following Ireland.<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11019\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11019\" class=\"wp-image-11019 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/shutterstock_1080171575-300x195.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/shutterstock_1080171575-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/shutterstock_1080171575-768x499.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/shutterstock_1080171575.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-11019\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Elderly men holding walking sticks<\/p><\/div>\n<p><em>In 2016\/17 there were 34,300 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ons.gov.uk\/peoplepopulationandcommunity\/birthsdeathsandmarriages\/deaths\/datasets\/excesswintermortalityinenglandandwalesreferencetables\">excess winter deaths<\/a> \u2013 that\u2019s one person dying every six minutes. With the majority of these deaths occurring in adults aged 75 and above, there is awareness to be raised as this exposed group are ignored by the media due to a conscious ageist perspective and the unconscious bias prevalent in our society.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>30.3% of deaths are attributable to avoidable circumstances, such as living in a cold home or not eating enough food \u2013 simple actions that can be easily resolved. Nearly half a million older people face food, fuel, and income poverty, with solo pensioners most at risk. There is a clear correlation between lacking money, not being able to heat your home, and consequently not having enough food.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Older people are less likely to use food banks, due to accessibility issues, loneliness, and the negative stigma attached to seeking charity.
