Millions of people tuned in to discover thousands of years of visual culture in <em>Civilisations<\/em>, to listen to research into how society works in <em>Thinking Allowed<\/em>, and to see if Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall could inspire healthier lifestyles in <em>Britain\u2019s Fat Fight<\/em>.<span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In 2018 OU\/BBC programmes won more awards than ever before, including a BAFTA for <i>The Detectives<\/i> and Royal Television Society award for <i>Hospital. <\/i>All our series reflect our broad and amazing curriculum delivering unique audio and video assets for our students.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Taking you on wonderful journeys<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">We took viewers on some wonderful journeys: Exploring the flora and fauna of the beautiful South West of England with <em>Hugh\u2019s Wild West<\/em> to venturing further afield in <i>A Search for a New Earth<\/i>, one of Professor Stephen Hawking\u2019s last series. There were series too which undertook a different form of exploration as we examined the hugely successful IKEA empire. OU\/BBC radio series continued the theme with <em>BBC Inside Science<\/em> and OU academics contributed to Radio 4\u2019s <i>Thinking Allowed <\/i>and <i>All in the Mind <\/i>examining a diverse range of subjects from Smart Cities to our mental wellbeing. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif; font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">2019 promises to be an equally inspiring year \u2013 look out for <i>Icons, Blue Planet Live<\/i> and new digital content on BBC Ideas. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s our top ten on TV, radio and online, that inspired you in your millions:<\/p>\n<h2>1. Civilisations<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-11183\" src=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/japanese_woman-300x204.jpg\" alt=\"Civilisations \" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/japanese_woman-300x204.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/japanese_woman-768x522.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/blogs\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/japanese_woman.jpg 1000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>This landmark series was billed as an antidote to modern life, with hours of detailed footage examining works of art. The series was presented by Mary Beard, David Olusoga and Simon Schama and was one of the most anticipated TV art series in many years. Thinking Allowed<\/h2>\n<p>This long-running Open University supported series on Radio 4 examines new research on how society works and this year has been discussing topics as diverse as domestic labour to post-truth. All in the Mind<\/h2>\n<p>Claudia Hammond presents All in the Mind, a Radio 4 programme exploring the limits and potential of the human mind.\u00a0 In 2018 the programme championed the BBC\u2019s Loneliness Experiment, trying to find out who feels most lonely and what can be done to make them feel more connected.<\/p>\n<p>Listen to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b006qxx9\/episodes\/player\">episodes from this year<\/a> on iPlayer.<\/p>\n<h2>5. Open University academics took an in-depth view of obesity and what you can do about it in\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/ounews.co\/education-languages-health\/health\/the-uks-obesity-epidemic-the-challenge\/\">this article by Dr Joan Simons<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/ounews.co\/education-languages-health\/health\/is-obesity-inevitable\/\">she also examines the alarming numbers of children who are leaving primary school as obese or overweight<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>6. Inside Science<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000; font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">This Radio 4 series throws light on the mysteries and controversies behind the science that\u2019s changing our world. Presented by Dr Adam Rutherford, with guests, topics have included Gene-edited twins, dark matter, potholes, virtual reality molecules and space missions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">You can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/b036f7w2\/episodes\/downloads\">listen to the series podcast<\/a><\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-family: Calibri;\"><span style=\"color: #000000; font-size: medium;\"> via the BBC website.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>7. Flatpack Empire<\/h2>\n<p>This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/tv-radio-events\/tv\/flatpack-empire\">behind-the-scenes look at IKEA<\/a>, one of the world\u2019s most successful and recognisable global brands showed the process behind product development and design as well as lifting a lid on the busy stores.<\/p>\n<h2>8. Super Sewer<\/h2>\n<p>With London\u2019s Victoria sewer network at bursting point this series uncovered the huge engineering project to massively expand the capital\u2019s capacity to deal with its own waste.<\/p>\n<p>Academic Dr Bob Everett wrote about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/science-maths-technology\/engineering-technology\/how-london-got-its-victorian-sewers?in_menu=765879\">how London\u2019s Victorian sewers came into existence<\/a>. The Big Life Fix<\/h2>\n<p>The UK\u2019s leading inventors created ingenious new solutions to everyday problems, building life-changing solutions for people in desperate need. Open University academics helped to develop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/tv-radio-events\/tv\/inventingtheimpossible#more-on-design\">these interactive resources on OpenLearn<\/a> to help viewers explore engineering and design.<\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"margin: 0px; color: #0d0d0d; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 19pt;\">10. BBC Ideas<\/span><\/b><span style=\"font-family: Calibri; font-size: medium;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; color: black; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">Short films for curious minds.\u00a0 The OU <\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Arial',sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">have co-produced <\/span>a collection of short-form factual videos, exploring ideas that challenge and inform the audience. Videos are hosted on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.com\/ideas\">www.bbc.com\/ideas<\/a> \u00a0and shared on the BBC\u2019s homepage and news website and all their social media channels.
